Greetings Loyal Airmen. It’s always good to be back in Hanger 27 after a exciting fun weekend at a new con. Last weekend Art Director Rob Davis and the Air Chief made our way to the Appalachian mountains of Eastern Kentucky to attend the third annual Pikeville Comic & Toy Convention. This all came about from our friendship with Pikeville local artist Michael Belcher who connected us with comic shop owner and con promoter Kent Leedy. It was Kent who extended the invitation to Airship 27 to come and be guest at the con. After a seven hour day on the road, we arrived in Pikeville on Thursday night. The following noon, we entered the UPIKE sports stadium and Rob began setting up our tables, banners and displays. Believe me Loyal Airmen, we brought lots of pulps and comics.

Once the tables were set up, we took our obligatory con shot of ourselves. Then the Air Chief proceeded to walk around the floor getting pictures of our new friend. Here’s one of artist Michael Belcher and his son Aiden, both wonderful comic talents. Not only is Michael an amazing writer/artist, Aiden has become a fantastic comic colorist.

We were thrilled to see the first issue of Michael’s new comic series, “Man in the Mask” was available and we happily swapped it for a few copies of our own “Mister Jigsaw – Man of a Thousand Parts.” Michael’s comics are available on-line at (www.IndyPlanet.com), you really should check them out. They are simply amazing.

Pikeville had so many great comics guests, you would bump into them anywhere you went. Above at left you have Rags Morales, Larry Hama and Mike Baron. At right, Ka-Blam’s very own Barry Gregory and Roland Man.

At one point, someone got a bunch of us together to snap the photo above, which you can pretty much describe at the Pikeville Wild Bunch. In front, left to right is Barry Gregory & Mike Baron, standing left to right is Jeff Whitting, Rob Davis, the Air Chief, Roland Man, Aiden Belcher and Michael Belcher. What a truly fun crew.

One of our biggest surprises came mid-afternoon on Sat. when we were asked if we sit on a panel with comics legend Jim Shooter, as yet another stellar guest at the show. Talk about your David and Goliath match up. Still, being a guest brings with it obligations that are only right and we agreed…with trepidation. We needn’t have worried one iota. Jim Shooter proved to be a really likeable gentlemen and sharing comic book memories was tons of fun. After the panel wrapped, he made a point of coming back to our tables with the Air Chief to meet Rob and learn more about Airship 27 Productions. He was honestly impressed and gave us a big thumbs for New Pulp.

Of course what’s a comic con without cos-players and Pikeville had its share of some great one. Our personal favorite was Mr. Freeze. That costume was simply astounding and all custom made by the fellow. Meanwhile promoter Kent Leedy had a chance to clown around with Marty McFly and Prof. Emmet Brown and the time-traveling DeLorean.

Another highlight of our trip was being able to hook up with the late Mark Justice’s wife, Norma Kay. Since Mark’s passing, Airship 27 has been continuing his weird western series, The Dead Sheriff and we debut volume # 3, “Holster Full of Death” at the show. So Norma and a three of friends hopped into a car and drove up from their home in Flatwoods Kentucky to see us. Rob and the Air Chief handed her the first copy off the presses.

When we realized several weeks earlier that artist Chris Rawding would not have the cover to this book ready in time for us to have at Pikeville, Rob went and did up an alternate cover and had the printer do up 15 copies. Then he did up a special sticker to identify these 15 as being part of the limited run with the cover above thus making them true pulp collectible copies. As we noted above, #1 of 15 went to Norma Kay while the Air Chief quickly snagged #2 of 15 for himself. That’s a pix of the inside page of our copy. Note, we did have a few left after the show and Rob will sell these at no extra charge to the first people who contact him.  And keep in mind, there will only ever be 15 with his cover.

So upon our return from Pikeville, artist Chris Rawding finished and turned in his cover to The Dead Sheriff # 3, Holster Full of Death.  See above to right. And now it is available for all at Amazon in both paperback and on Kindle. Whereas the final icing on this cake, it thus became Airship 27 Productions’ # 200th title!!  Not bad for a little pulp outfit run by two old comic pros. In eleven years we’ve produced 200 titles!! Now that’s something to be really proud of and we couldn’t have done it without everyone one of you Loyal Airmen who have supported us all along. We truly can’t thank you enough.

Greetings Loyal Airmen, and welcome to this week’s Flight Log.  As you read these words, the Air Chief and Art Director Rob Davis are in Kentucky for the Pikeville Comic & Toy Con.  Meanwhile a few topics here for you to peruse and enjoy.

There is nothing the Air Chief likes better than seeing our friends succeed in whatever they do. Artist Zane DeGaine has been working hard at his craft and last year debut his first ever comic book FASTBACK at a local con. Now he’s just completed an assignment for the latest issue of SKILL SET magazine, which we are holding above.

In the magazine is a 3 page spread article on classic violent macho he-man movies and all the illustrations were done by Zane.  And they are beautiful. Congratulations, amigo!  We’re sure there will be many for such assignments in the future.

And speaking of friends, how about 62 of them who all contributed to the LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION which last week was released as an audio-book from Radio Archives!

THEY SAID IT COULDN’T BE DONE!

Four years ago, Airship 27 Productions published “Legends of New Pulp Fiction,” a giant, 776 pg book containing 62 stories by today’s leading pulp writers and illustrated by 35 of the best graphic artist in the business with a cover by Doug Klauba. The project was inspired as a charity project for then ailing pulp publisher/writer Tommy Hancock. Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor Ron Fortier and Art Director Rob Davis, helmed the herculean task aided by Assistant Editors Jaime Ramos & Todd Jones. Upon its publication the book became an immediate success and is today considered the premier introductory volume to New Pulp Fiction.

Shortly after the book’s release, a few fans joked on social media about the possibility of an audio version of the giant tome. At that time, most thought the idea impossible as the logistics and man-hours required would be daunting.  Never tell Tom Brown of Radio Archives something cannot be done. After years of strategizing, Brown assembled six of the finest narrators in the audio-book game, devised a workable schedule and assigned them each X number of stories. Now the project is completed and “Legends of New Pulp Fiction,” is available both as a digital download and a 40 CDs package in two sets.

Volume One contains CDs 1-20 while Volume Two CDs 21-40. Each set’s spine is two inches thick. Readers Mark Finfrock, Joe Formichella, Paul Curtis, Roger Price, Mike and Milton Bagby provide 40 hours of listening thrills and spills.  We are still pretty much in shock about all this. When Tom informed Rob and Yours Truly that this audio version was a reality, both of us were stunned and that’s an understatement. TomBrown  is a creative dynamo and his passion for what he does is inspiring and we couldn’t be any happier with this new and exciting version of our book. New Pulp fans are in for an unbelievable listening adventure.  Whether downloading the digital streaming version or the big two CD sets, Loyal Airmen are getting 40 hours of amazing audio pulp adventures.

Finally, after a long hiatus, we are thrilled to announce the release of Airship 27 Productions newest pulp title – THE PERSONA, Green Fleshed Fiends by Michael Housel.  The Persona is sort of a Dr. Strange – Phantom Detective kind of occult warrior and in this new thriller he battles a German scientist who has figured how to open a portal to other dimensions and thereby allow all kinds of creatures to invade our world. Chris Rawding provides the stunning cover and Kevin Paul Shaw Broden the black and white interiors.  As ever available from Amazon in paperback and on Kindle. Greeting Loyal Airmen, this week we thought we’d have some fun sharing a few art “roughs” with you. What are “roughs” you ask. Well they are simply a very loose sketch done by an artist to get the feel for what composition will work best for his drawing. In the past few days we’ve received two such for two different Airship 27 Production books coming your way.

Now the firsts will show you were done by Canadian artist Steve Otis.  Steve has been assigned to do the cover to Philip McCormac’s novel, BEHOWLS THE MOON. This is the story of a werewold operating in Ireland during the Easter Rebellion of 1916 when the Irish Free Army staged a revolt in Dublin.  Whereas the main character is turned into a werewolf by a beautiful gypsy girl, the Air Chief hunted up the two pictures above on-line and sent them to Steve asking that his cover incorporate both such a creature and beautiful girl. Note, we did not ask him to “copy” them, but be inspired by them.

Not content to just do one “rough,” Steve went and did six of them and then sent the above page to the Air Chief and Art Director Rob Davis.  In looking at his positioning of the figures in each “rough” we told him we liked numbers 2 and 6 the best. Whereas Rob suggested to Steve that he take the girl from 2 and combining here with the werewolf from 6. Steve went along with that and is now in the process of doing the detailed drawing; his next step before he tackles the actual painting. Needless to say we’re very exciting as to what he is going to produce.

Next up are images from our 6th volume of SINBAD – The New Adventures.  This one features a long novella by writer Nancy Hansen and a short story by Greg Hatcher.  Above are two illustrations for Nancy’s tale by Mexican artist Jesus Rodriguez. Jesus is now working on the last three illos that will adorn Greg’s tale. Seeing the book was moving down the production line, the Air Chief contacted artist Adam Shaw and asked if he’d be available to do the cover for this one. Adam has done several stellar covers for us in the past and we love his work. Our only request of him was to have our black Sinbad at the wheel of his ship, the Blue Nymph with a sexy harem girl behind him.

And above is what Adam sent along as his idea “rough.”  Obviously we love it and when it is full drawn and colored, it will be amazing.  We are Airship 27 are so lucky to work with some of the finest artists in the world.

And finally, we’re going to end this art-themed installment with a beautifully finished illustration. It is by another new artist to Airship 27 Productions, Clayton Murwin and comes from the novel EYE OF DAWN by Brad Sinor. Truly some gorgeous detailing in Clayton’s drawing.

Greeting Loyal Airmen, hope you are all enjoying summer. The other day the Air Chief found himself talking about his career to a friend. How it all began after we’d come home from Vietnam and back into civilian life. There were two comic book creators up in Canada named Vincent Marchesano and Art Cooper and they had formed a little project called Spectrum Publication where by they wrote and did their own mini-comic. And by that we mean comics no bigger than a package of cigarettes.

Above are the actual covers to four of those little mini-comics.  The series was called ID, EGO/AEON. At the upper left corner is cover featuring a character created by Cooper called Freedom Fighter. In his concept, Cooper imagined the Nazis having won World War II and now controlling North America. In this bleak world resistant groups spring up led by the mysterious masked man. We were so enamored with this idea and the character that we sat down and wrote a 4 pg stories of him and mailed off to Art and Vince. Much to our delight they liked our little story and Art said he would draw it in the next issue.  That’s the cover to upper right.

The story was called “Pay Your Dues” and above are the very first two pages of the first comic the Air Chief ever wrote and had published. It’s dated 1970. Lots of others have followed. Oh, yeah.

When the Air Chief was a little guy, his father would take him to a local barber for his haircuts. Now this gentleman’s sons had all grown up by the mid-1940s and left behind their comic books. So the barber put them in small shelves for his kid customers like the Air Chief. Thanks to these old comics, we discovered the likes of the Justice Society of America, Captain America and the Human Torch and our favorite of the Golden Age heroes, the original Captain Marvel and written and illustrated by the amazing C.C. Beck. In fact when the Air Chief and his pal artist Gary Kato created our own comedy superhero, Mr. Jigsaw Man of a Thousands, we were thrilled to have the late comic historian and critic Don Thompson compare Jiggy to the best of C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel.

Now in 1941 Republic Serials made two chapter-plays featuring two of Fawcett Comics most popular comic heroes; Captain Marvel and Spy Smasher. We recently picked up a Blu-ray edition of “The Adventures of Captain Marvel,” one of our favorites of the serials. It stars Frank Coghlan Jr. as Billy Batson and when he says the magic word, SHAZAM, he’s transformed in to the Adonis like Captain Marvel and wonderfully portrayed by Tom Tyler. Tyler would go on to film another classic hero in Columbia’s serial of The Phantom. Most serial fans argue amiably between themselves as to which is the best of the Republic serials. Personally the Air Chief thinks it’s really a tie between “The Adventures of Captain Marvel” and “Spy Smasher” which starred Kane Richmond. Both were extremely well made and tons of fun to watch.  Here’s hoping there is a Blu-ray version of “Spy Smasher” in our future.

Greetings Loyal Airmen, we trust you had a great 4th of July holiday. Now it’s back to work at Hangar 27 and let’s start with a look at a special comic project just getting started.

Artist Gary Kato just turned in the first five pages to the new Mr. Jigsaw story we are doing called, “Miracle on Christmas Island” and as you can see by the page above, it features some of Gary’s best work to date. This when finished will be a full color 25 pg Christmas story to kick off issue # 16. Maine artist Mort Todd will be doing the coloring and drawing the cover. Mort is a coloring genius and has already colored three short Jiggy tales in the past. It is our plan to collect all of them behind this larger new lead story. Ergo we are looking at a whopping BIG issue that will eventually be published at Amazon. Stay tuned, we’ll continue to keep you updated. Fingers crossed we can actually get it out this Winter.

Talking about Gary had the Air Chief reminiscing about the first time the two of us hooked up on a project. The Air Chief had written a little sci-fi short story called the “Raid on Tauron IV” and asked Gary to do up one or two spot illustrations before submitting to the little fiction mag, “Space and Time” published by Gordon Linzner out of New York. Gave me five interior illos and did the actual over for the issue.  Above is that cover (to left) and one of the interior pieces. All of them were gorgeous. This was in the early 1970s and the beginning of a life-long friendship still going strong to this day. Thanks Gary.

We’re also happy to report that Radio Archives has begun producing Airship 27 Audio books and to date they’ve done Codename Intrepid by Robert J. Mendenall and the anthology Marty Quade.

Two weeks ago they released my Nighthawk. and as of this morning, they are releasing Wayne Carey’s novel Company of Shadows. Greetings Loyal airmen and patriots, we hope your 4th of July celebrations are going great and that while enjoying this holiday you think long and hard on how blessed we all are living in the greatest country in the world. AMEN.

About a week ago we were thrilled to show all of you one of the new pages being worked on by graphic artist Jim O’Riley for the Brother Bones graphic novel. It is up on the left…and was done in soft pencils. To the right you see Jim beginning to digitally ink the piece. Upon seeing the original page, the Air Chief suggested Jim have the men lose their hats, as the scene is taking place indoors and it would not have been natural for them to have kept on their fedoras. Jim happily obliged. Note the two gunmen shooting up the place, have just come in through the back door and thus they alone have on their hats. We know, small item, but it in the details that things either work or do not. As for Jim’s art, it is truly amazing. We’ll continued to give you sneak-peeks like this as the project progresses.

Another show for Airship 27 Productions. As most of you Loyal Airmen know, for several years the Air Chief and Art Director Rob Davis would attend two pulp conventions; the Windy City Pulp & Paper Con in Chicago every Spring and then Pulp Fest in late Summer. This was when the latter was held in Columbus, Ohio. When they moved Pulp Fest to Pittsburgh, it became economically impossible for us to attend. Thus since we’ve only had the Chicago show to look forward to. Well, not this year. Again, as those of you who follow these Flight Logs weekly know, this year Airship 27 Productions is going to be at a second con; the Pikeville Comic & Toy Show in Pikeville, Kentucky. Months ago, artist Mike Belcher hit up the Air Chief about being a guest at this year’s show, which happens on Aug 2nd and 3rd. In our discussions we mentioned Rob and Airship 27 and how their con could get TWO creators for the price of one. Mike and the Committee loved the idea and the invitation was then extended to Rob as well…i.e. we are now both going AS Airship 27 Productions.  So please, Loyal Airmen, if you living anywhere in the vicinity of Pikeville, Kentucky, do mark you calendars and come on down. We’d so love to meet you there.

Greetings Loyal Airmen, looks like it didn’t take long for our vacation mode to be dispelled.  Upon getting back to Hangar 27 the Air Chief found a box full of goodies.

As all you Loyal Airmen know, our Airship 27 logo was designed all those years ago by our Art Director Rob Davis and early on we used it on lots of things. One was a baseball cap with the Air Chief actually wore so much, it eventually just fell apart.  Well the other day we finally went and ordered up a new one that just came in. Those of you who will see us at cons this year can expect us to be wearing it proudly.

On the comics front, we’re happy to report that artist Jim O’Riley is doing some great preliminary work on our Brother Bones graphic novel. Above is a sample page from early in the story. We absolutely love it.

Greetings Loyal Airmen, two nights ago Valerie and the Air Chief returned to our home here in Fort Collins, Colorado, after a whirlwind two weeks vacation back east. In the first half our trip, we visited with our families and took some pictures we want to share with you this week.

So first up, Val and the Air Chief happy to be back in New Hampshire, were we both grew up. First event on the agenda, get the Fortier clan together. So plans were made for all of us to meet at a well known local seafood eatery. Really, you can’t go to New England without having delicious seafood.  The gathering was so much fun and the first time Mom (Gabrielle Fortier) had all her four children together in 15 long years.  Seated is the baby of the crew, our sister Ann Marie Cormier, then of course Mom at a spry 94. Upper left, Ye Old Air Chief. Then brother Paul Fortier, the youngest brother and lastly second brother, George Fortier Jr. named for our Dad, George Fortier.

Of course you can’t have a family gathering without the respective significant others. So after the first group moved away, Mom was then surrounded by the Outlaws.  Going left to right, David (Paul’s partner) Anne (George’s wife) Norm (Ann Marie’s husband) and of course Valerie (the Air Chief’s better half.) A nice surprise to this wonderful reunion was having George and Anne’s two grown up children join us, so here’s Mom with niece Emily Robinson and nephew Justin Fortier.  As you can see Mom was in her glory.

And here’s a great shot of all of us together.  Was a day we won’t soon forget.

We certainly kept the wait staff busy. The Air Chief chowed down on clams and haddock nuggets.

We had so much fun being all together again. The next day, Ann Marie and Norm were flying back to Florida, their home, George and Anne to Mass. and Paul and David to Vermont.  Have to wonder when, if ever, we’ll be able to do this again.  Val and the Air Chief then headed off to hook up with her family before the second half of trip.

After a few more days in New Hampshire we were off to Conn. to attended our granddaughter Taryn’s high school graduation. Happily our daughter Heather, and her mother Donna flew in from Chicago to join the festivities. Above left is the Air Chief with Heather and son Scott.  Sadly our second son, Kevin, was unable to get away from work to join us. To right is the Air Chief, Ms. Taryn Fortier and Val. She’s holding one of four parakeets they have.

More pix, Taryn and proud Dad, and then Mom Katie joined in. Katie was a such a great hostess to all of us while we were there. She had a great deal to juggle and did it so graciously.  We can’t thank her enough.

Heather, Taryn and her grandmother, Donna Simard, and Scott.  Begin to feel the old age thing creeping up on us when our little grand kids are suddenly becoming adults.  Taryn will be going to the University of New Hampshire come Sept. We are all so proud of her.

One of the coolest gifts Taryn received was this amazing quilt her mother had made for her. During her four years at Bethel High, Taryn belonged to the marching band, a talented group that won many awards while she was there. Every year they would do up a new tee-shirt for the members.  So Katie took all of them that she had kept to a local seamstress and had them turned into this magnificent quilt. A special gift Taryn will always cherish.

When our children were growing up, my ex-wife’s father was still a conductor on the Boston & Maine Railroad. He would retired after 45 years of service. Still the children got to know and love him. He was a really good man. In fact oldest son Scott got the railroading bug from his grandfather. Well, way back when, the Air Chief thought he’d try his hand at painting. As many of you Loyal Airmen know, our mother is a very talented artist. So as a subject, we did a winter station with the old steamer pulling in. When finished and framed, we gave it to Scott’s grandad and he loved it. After he passed away many years ago, the painting was taken down and put away. Recently our daughter Michelle, while cleaning out her attic, uncovered it. She then gave it to us to bring down and give to Scott, knowing their grandfather would have wanted him to have it. As it turned out, he’s recently finished touching up his own office, as he works from home, and was thrilled when we gave it to him.

And you guys thought the Air Chief could only write.

And there you have it, Loyal Airmen. The trip is over, we’re home, exhausted but happy. Family is the greatest gift in the world. We treasure all of them.

Greetings Loyal Airmen, as most of you know the Air Chief meets once a month with a group of comic fans and professionals here in Fort Collins, CO once a month. Many of our group are so talented. One such is custom toy maker Jesse Bonavazi. Earlier today, at our June hook up, he surprised the Air Chief with three figures he’d been secretly working on.

In other exciting news, we’ve just released volume # 5 DANSEUSE, in writer Nancy Hansen’s amazing pirate saga Jezebel Johnston. In this one Jez finds herself aboard a French ship raid off the Barbary Coast.  Art Director Rob Davis handles the wonderful interior illustrations, while Pulp Factory Award winning artist Ted Hammond turns in his second cover for this series; which we love. As ever the book is available at Amazon in both paperback and on Kindle.

And for those of you Loyal Airmen who may have come in late, we actually collected the first four Jezebel Johnstone novels into one big omnibus volley called BIRTH OF A BUCCANEER and it too is available at Amazon.  We aim to please.

Greetings Loyal Airmen, we are writing this the day after Memorial Day. We hope all of you Loyal Airmen not only had a wonderful holiday weekend, but also, in your private ways took time out to thank in prayers, all Americans who fought in died in all wars to keep our great country free. Their sacrifices must never ever be forgotten and all of must strive every day to keep this land free for future generations. We owe them that much.

And while the long weekend meant time off for many people, some of the amazing artist the Air Chief is working with these days just kept on creating.  Above is a great panel showing Navajo shaman Eddie Nightsky, one of the characters from JIN & TONIK, as developed by the Air Chief and artist creator Cesar Feliciano.

Meanwhile Jim O’Riley was working on “roughs” from our Brother Bones graphic novel script. Artists do up these roughs so as to see what the strengths and weaknesses are inherent in each page. Then learning that, they adapt the final pages to reflect the best compositions. Jim’s plan is to do “roughs” for ALL 130 pgs before he begins the final artwork. Now that’s dedication to one’s craft.

Every Wed afternoon the Air Chief gets together with pals Todd Jones and James Gaubatz.  Wel this week, James surprised both Todd and the Air Chief with new hats carrying the Wicked Awesome Tales logo embroidered on them. This is the comic title Todd and James produced together and the Air Chief has contributed to. Thus far they have eleven issues out.  Hats are spiffy and nice addition to our hat collection.

Finally, a few weeks ago, we showed off an amazing piece of artwork done by our pal Cesar Feliciano of a Pirate Queen. Cesar is such a gifted artist. Well he’s also got a truly generous heart because upon reading my praise of this piece, he went and packaged it up and sent it to us as a gift. Wow. We are going to need to get it matted and put up somewhere in the office. The Air Chief is blessed with such amazing friends.
