FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

  • On 5 May | '2017

Greeting Loyal Airmen, this week’s Flight Log is centering heavily on what the Air Chief has been up to comic-wise, and believe there is quite a lot of fun projects to tell you about. So let’s dig right in.

For the past few weeks artist Flavio Silva has been drawing an 8 pg Brother Bones primer which tells the origin of the Undead Avenger. This was being done for John Helmer’s Lucky Comics which you will able to download a digital copy for FREE tomorrow, Sat. 6th May by going to (www.luckycomics.com) Flavio’s artwork is amazing and a heads up, there eventually will be a full colored version of this mini-comic, but that’s for something else really, really special. To left about is the mock-up John was plastering all over the internet yesterday using an early sketch Rob Davis had done up. To the right is the finished art, which you’ll see when downloading this really special comic.

Happily, Lucky Comics got the final cover in from Rob and here it is above.

Now many of you know my comedy superhero character Mr. Jigsaw Man of a Thousand Parts had his start in the now defunct comic company, Charlton. For the past few years my good friend, Mort Todd, has been producing a wonderful full color giant comic called, “The Charlton Arrow.” In it he has reprinted several of our Mr.Jigsaw stories in full, glorious color. So when we learned Mort was in the process of putting together another issue, we had an idea approached artist Loston Wallace about it. Loston is an awesome artist and like the Air Chief, a Charlton fan so we were able to sell him on our idea of working together on a special 8 pager. Below his Mort’s official press release about that.

“VERY pleased to announce Loston Wallace will be drawing a Winnie the Witch horror tale for a future issue, written by Ron Fortier! The only thing that could be cooler is if Matt Webb colored it… oh, wait! He is! Also, the Charlton Neo editorial board would like to preemptively extend apologies to all who are offended by the following, excellent Colonel Whiteshroud, Monster Hunter illo by Loston.”

And then there is a brand new project being helmed by James Ludwig and Dave Noe to resurrect the 60s Dell Comic heroes, most of which are now in public domain. In a series of big, fat books, these guys want to publish both strips and prose stories featuring these long forgotten characters. When Dave approached the Air Chief about this, we thought it was a totally fun idea and jumped right in. We done a 2,000 word Owl prose adventure and Rob Davis is providing the illustration to accompany it. The Owl was pretty much a second rate Batman for Dell, but still a weird, likeable character. We’ll keep you posted on when the book is out and available.

In other news, the PulpFest people announce this year’s nominees for their Munsey Award given out at their show annually. The Air Chief is among 17 nominees for this award that recognizes a person’s extra contributions to pulp fandom and the community as a whole. Forgive the faulty memory, but this could be the third time the Air Chief has made this list and we are extremely flattered by that. Our sincere thanks to all those kind souls who put our name up for consideration.

And that’s a wrap for this week, Loyal Airmen. Thanks as ever for stopping by and we’ll hook up again her next Friday.

Ron – Over & Out!
