GHOST BOY IS HERE
- On 22 Feb | '2013
Greetings Loyal Airmen, we've got some very cool things to share with all of you this week. So let's kick it off with the announcement of our second title of of the year.
The Air Chief wonders how many of you remember those dorky comic titles that appeared during the 1960s from second tier outfits like Dell and Gold Key? They were really odd-duck heroes with weird powers who were generally battling the Soviets. Remember in the 60s we were right smack dab in the middle of the Cold War and the Red Menace was a common threat in movies, on TV and again, in comics. Anyway, last year a group of our pulp writing colleagues got together and wondered if we could create our own bogus 60s comic title, then as an homage to all of them, do a collection of prose stories featuring that character. The end result was Alex Conroy, code-name GHOST BOY, who works for a secret government agency known as S.O.S. (Scientific Office of Security) and his best pal is an 8 foot tall robot called P.O.P.S. Then, while our writers, Terry Alexander, Micah Harris and Andrew Salmon start writing up some very exciting Ghost Boy adventures, the Air Chief convinced his long time comic-artist pal, Gary Kato, to illustrate a 9 pg comic strip “origin” story that actually appears in the beginning of this first volume. Gary also drew all the interior illustrations. That gorgeous cover was painted by the super talented Laura Givens of Denver. The book is now on-sale at Amazon, on Kindle and at our Airship 27 Productions website accessed by clicking on to the dirigible logo to the upper left of this column. We hope you'll give GHOST BOY a try.
One of the first true pulp stories the Air Chief ever wrote was “Miss Fury in Vermont,” which appeared long, long ago in a little seen anthology featuring all female lead characters. Our hero, was half Japanese (her father) and Norwegian (her mother, a tall blonde former Olympian) resulting in a beautiful, tall Eurasian with jet lack hair. We had hopes of someday doing more of her adventures but time just got away from us and that never happened. Then last year our pal, Tommy Hancock, offered to re-publish that story in a issue of his monthly magazine, Pro Se Presents. Well, its now available at Amazon, again go find Pro Se Presents # 17. (Cover image above.) The illustration above is of Fury and her werewolf companion which was sadly never used before and we've since forgotten the name of the artist. It's really a nice piece of art.
Finally we are going to leave you this week with a really nice Sneak Peek at another of our pulp books now in production. As most of you Loyal Airmen will recall, last year we released the first volume in our new series, SINBAD – The New Voyages. That book featured a cover by Bryan Fowler and interiors by Ralf van der Hoeven and is still available at Amazon and on our website. Well, we've had the stories assembled for the second book for some time now and last week we recruited a talented young artist named Steve Wilcox to do the interiors for this second book. That's one of his sketches of our hero above. We're thrilled to have Steve on board and we've recently been in talks with an exciting new painter who is very interested in doing the cover painting for this book. Stay tuned, more as things develop.
And there you have it for this week, Loyal Airmen. As we write this, snow is blanketing most of Colorado and points east of us. Sort of a late winter storm. Winter isn't quite over yet, though our beloved Red Sox play their first Spring Training game Saturday morning in Fort Myers, Florida. Wahooo. We can't wait for the new Baseball season to get started. Till next week, stay warm.
Ron – Over & Out!
