ODDS & ENDS

  • On 24 Jun | '2016

Greetings Loyal Airmen, this week we’re going to cover a wide range of topics. One of the things the Air Chief loves to do is see different artists take on one character. Some of you may be familiar with the female space smuggler character we created a while back called Captain Jain Marlee.

12900042_10208980359050001_767194677_nCJM01

Above to the left is Captain Jain as drawn by Luis Rivera from the 6 pg story, “A Cold Demise” which is currently appearing in several comics from small independent outfits.  Eventually we hope to have the story in a future each of “Ron Fortier’s Tales of the Macabre.”  Over the weekend we wrote a brand new 11 pg Captain Jain story called “Ghost World” and it will be drawn by an artist named Aaron Mallard. The black and white drawing above to the right his Aaron’s take on our lovely hero.

CJM_with_Logo13514259_1140992729256169_693208324_n

Now working with Aaron on this story is his partner, designer/letterer Mike Adkins.  Upon seeing the black and white illustration, Mike added some coloring and then whipped up a truly amazing logo making it look like a magazine cover.  When the Air Chief saw this, he was delighted and told Mike how much we loved that logo design. So what does Mike then go and do, he creates this tee-shirt mock-up with that same design.  We think its really, really cool.  Who knows, maybe some day when we collect all the Captain Jain Marlee stories in one collection, we may give this tee-shirt thing a go. What do all you Loyal Airmen thing?  Yea or nea?

And now for more updates on the Brother Bones Movie now in pre-production. Over the past week, the Air Chief, working with producers Erik Franklin and Daniel Husser hammered out a story outline for the actual film.  It went back and forth between and the Air Chief, working off my original stories.  And we have to tell you, these two young fellows are fantastic storytellers.  In the middle of merging two stories, we were left with continuity gaps etc. and both Erik and Daniel were quick to offer up suggestions on what kind of new scenes were required to make the story flow properly.  Honestly, what we ended up with by the third revision is simply wonderful and now Erik is writing the shooting screenplay from this outline.  So while he and Daniel were doing their writing thing, the Air Chief got together with Airship 27 Art Director Rob Davis and we decided to do a promotional poster to help drum up interest in the project.  The Air Chief spent a few hours on-line looking at old classic movie posters for inspiration and finally found one for a movie called “The Undead.” What could be more ironic in that we’re doing a movie about an “Undead Avenger.” And the second we saw that imagery we knew it was the ideal starting point for Rob to work his magic.  Next to it you can now see the results, the promotional poster for “Brother Bones – The Undead Avenger.”  Note, we are going to have a bunch of these made up as prints to both sell at upcoming conventions and, yes, on-line at our Airship 27 website. Stay tuned, Rob is now looking into print outfits to set them up and hopefully by next week the Air Chief will have the specifics for any of you Loyal Airmen who would like to have this poster up on your walls.

13466081_989505067813297_965775653477339462_n

At the same we’ve got all this attention on the movie, we do not want to forget Scaldcrow Games’ role playing module, “Ron Fortier’s Cape Noire” still in production. Their head honcho, T Glenn Bane just turned in this great illustration of Waldo, the brutish assistant/bodyguard of Cape Noire’s mad scientist, Prof. Bugosi. He first appeared in the Roman Leary novel, “Six Days of the Dragon,” and both he and the mad Bugosi will be featured in the movie.  Oh yeah, things are really heating up on the Brother Bones front.

EVENT

And finally, we received a call from the events planner at the local Barnes & Noble that they had put up a poster announcing the Air Chief’s July 6th appearance. So we took a ride down to the store to check it out. Looking forward to this night.  We’ll be talking informally on the history of American Pulps, the birth of New Pulp and then signing copies of several of titles.  Hopefully some friends will stop by and we’ll have a decent turn out.

And that’s it for this week, Loyal Airmen, as ever thanks for stopping by.  Hope you are all enjoying your summer.

BROTHER BONES – THE MOVIE

  • On 17 Jun | '2016

BBscreenJPG

Dear Loyal Airmen, we’ve had ourselves one hell of a couple of weeks.  A small film outfit out of Seattle named Franklin – Husser, Entertainment LLC, approached the Air Chief two weeks ago requesting our approval to make a feature length movie starring our original pulp hero, Brother Bones – The Undead Avenger.  In their letter to us, they went on to explain how much they loved our Brother Bones stories and very much wanted to do a movie that would capture the character exactly as he appears in our stories…not changing a thing.  Along with their letter was a short two minute text video they did to help convince us.  The above image is a screen shot from that video clip showing Bones overlooking his city of Cape Noire at night. Let us say, the Air Chief was never more amazed and delighted upon viewing that short little film.  These gentlemen have tons of cinematic storytelling talents and after viewing this clip, we were only too happy to give them permission to proceed with the project. They offered the Air Chief the job of writing the screenplay but in the end, after actually speaking with Erik Franklin and Daniel Husser, we agreed the Air Chief would write the full plot outline from which Erik would write the shooting screenplay and then both Erik and the Air Chief will take equal credits.  We have since written that outline and Erik is now buys on that screenplay.  Again, it has been a wild couple of weeks for the Fortiers and there is a whole lot more that needs to happen for such an undertaking to become a reality. Please keep your fingers crossed for all of us and hey, few prayers along the way would certainly be appreciated.  Naturally keep following this blog and we will keep you all posted as the project moves forward.

And while all of us were going crazy over the movie deal, our Airship 27 Art Director, Rob Davis was in Little Rock, AK, at the River City Comic Expo holding down the show.  Rob reports it was a really fun show and he met lots of really nice fans.

13423825_10207543674004354_6881378292366674619_n13240010_10207543674044355_3801767636135119206_n

One of the highlights of Rob’s weekend was his accepting the Pulp Award at this show for Best Pulp Anthology for our “Legends of New Pulp Fiction.”  Again, thanks from the bottom of our hearts to all of you who helped make this book such an overwhelming success.

CHARLTONImg_1804

Happy to report our favorite Man of a Thousand Parts is getting some really great exposure lately.  The Mr. Jigsaw & Liberty Belle team up strip with did with Gary Kato for our own book gets reprinted in full color in the new issue of Mort Todd’s excellent Charlton Arrow. They do the first half the story, the second to appear in the next issue. Trust me, Mort’s coloring of this strip is amazing. We just got our copy in the mail the other day.

13418910_1153810378017169_1099507449256849155_n

Speaking of Mr. Jigsaw, earlier this week artist pal Darren Goodhart decided to color the Jiggy pin-up he’d done for us a while back.  We’d published it in the back of one of the collected editions in black and white. Imagine the Air Chief’s surprise when we saw Darren not only did a great job of coloring the piece, but he slapped the original Charlton Comics Scary Tales cover behind his figure on the jigsaw pieces. What a great job. Enough so we’re hoping to get Darren to do the actual cover to our next issue of Mr. Jigsaw Man of a Thousand Parts.  Stay tuned.

HolmesKindle2

Last year we collected a bunch of Sherlock Holmes stories by writer I.A. Watson and published as a Kindle Only edition.  Well, that book is selling so well, we just today released a second volume in the series, this time all by writer Aaron Smith. Again, this is only available on Kindle.  So if you’re heading for the lake or beach this summer and want to download some excellent reading on your Kindle, the Air Chief would humbly suggest this great title. As ever, thanks for your support.

And that’s it for this week Loyal Airmen.  Time to get back to the movie script.

PREQUEL TO SCI-FI CLASSIC

  • On 10 Jun | '2016

Greetings Loyal Airmen, the warm weather we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived with temps here in Colorado rising weekly.  80s and 90s getting to be the norm.  Part of which was most helpful last weekend.

IMG_1782

The Fort Collins Open Street which we mentioned in last Friday’s Flight Log went off without a hitch this past Sunday. The day was beautifully as we set up a small table with our Mr. Jigsaw comics and prepared to greet neighbors and other people out to have a good time.  One of the first to come visit us was Batman!  Yup, that’s our old buddy Alex in his great 60s costume.

IMG_1783

Alex wasn’t the only cos-player to enjoy the neighbor event, later that afternoon several others stopped by our table including these three young ladies who are promoting this year’s Fort Collins Comic Con happening in Aug. Hidden by me in this pix, is our son Alan. Thanks to Val for snapping the pictures. It really was a great day.

TARGET

And while we were all enjoying ourselves at the Open Street event, some fool across town drop his SUV straight one of those giant red cement balls in front of the local Target’s store. Don’t believe that’s possible, check out the photos above posted by our town newspaper.  Police had to call in a heavy-duty tow-truck to get him off the ball. The Air Chief doesn’t think this is what was meant by National Red Ball day.

Air-129

And now, after a really slow period in May, Airship 27 Productions proudly announces the release of it’s latest title – THE TOWERS OF METROPOLIS based on the classic sci-fi silent film of German director Fritz Lang first released in 1927. This has been one of the Air Chief’s favorite flicks and this anthology tells four brand new stories set in that fabulous city before the events of the movie.  Our writers are Erik Franklin, Michael Panush, Kevin Noel Olson and William & Michael Maynard. The latter two are a father and son team. William has written for us in the past where as this is the first fiction tale he has ever written with his teenage son Michael. Obviously it is a proud moment for all involved.  Also author Fred Adams Jr. kicks off the book with a great essay on the film history of Metropolis. We have a dynamite cover by the great Michael Kaluta and amazing interior art by our pal Pedro Cruz all making this one of the finest books we’ve ever produced.  As ever it is available at Amazon in hardcopy and with a few days will be out on Kindle. We think the book is special and hope all you Loyal Airmen will agree.

And finally our partnership with Radio Archives continues with their latest audio book version of our QUATERMAIN – The New Adventures featuring two novellas by Aaron Smith and Alan J. Porter as read by Jem Matzan and available here –

And that’s it for this week, Loyal Airmen. We’ve got a huge announcement coming your way next week, so see you back here in seven days.

A WET SPRING

  • On 3 Jun | '2016

Greeting Loyal Airmen, if any of you live in an area considered a “drought zone” then you’ll know how much we here in Colorado do appreciate what rain we do get. But honestly this seems to have been one of the wettest Springs we’ve had in years and it is quite frankly getting frustration.  What with Memorial Day festivities last weekend getting cancelled or simply rained on.  Seems we’re locked into a weather pattern that gives us bright, sunny mornings and then by midday, the clouds move and so does the rain.  Ye Old Chief if often reminded of the monsoon seasons back in Vietnam. Here’s hoping we eventually do get a stretch of normal, warm weather…without the wet stuff.  Please.

Hot air

Hot air balloons are a common site in our area but last Sunday morning we had one float over our home so low our neighbors were outside waving up at the fliers. Valerie grabbed her cellphone and snapped the picture above. What a truly beautiful sight.

Final-Munsey-Award

Every year the good people of the Pulpfest convention give out the Munsey Award; named after one of the first editors of pulp magazines back in the 30s. It is a framed copy of the image above showing a ghostly Shadow coming out of a fiery typewriter. The award is given to that individual who has contributed to advancement pulp fandom in extraordinary efforts.  There are usually ten nominees and only past winners are allowed to vote each year.  We mention all this as the Air Chief is one of those ten nominees this year.  It is our third such and we are extremely grateful to those pulp fans who were kind enough to nominate us.  Win or lose, this is truly a singular honor and we thank the Pulpfest organizing committee for the great job they do.  As ever, Airship 27 Productions will be in attendance when the show rolls around at the end of July.  More on that as it approaches.

GUNSBB1 CoverA REVISED

Meanwhile it’s time to update you Loyal Airmen on the two pulp comic series the Air Chief has been writing for Moonstone Comics.  Guns of the Black Bat # 1 should have been out last week, sadly there was a bit of a snafu in production and the wrong creator credits ended up on the cover. Above is the corrected cover and we’re told it went off to the printer this past week. All fingers crossed we’ll be seeing it in comic shops soon.  We’ll keep you posted for sure.

page07

The second comic is a four issue mini-series called Black Bat – Domino Lady : Danger Coast to Coast and it is coming along rather well.  The Air Chief wrote the actual scripts a while back and they were all assigned to some pretty amazing artist. Issues 1 & 2 are being done by Michael Dorman, issue # 3 is in the hands of Mark Grammel and the last chapter (that’s a page from it above) # 4 is being done by the fantastic Vincezo Sasone.  We can’t exactly say when this particular series will be out, but we can tell you Loyal Airmen, it will be worth the wait.  We’ve had a blast writing these.

theo-james

Finally it was officially announced this past week that British actor Theo James will be the new James Bond.  His first go at 2007 will be out in 2017.  He’s best known for his supporting role in the sci-fi Divergent movies. Could be a good choice. Time will tell.

And that’s it for this week Loyal Airmen, as ever, thanks for stopping by.

THE PAST AND THE FUTURE

  • On 27 May | '2016

13244703_10208111217670864_8431084387952044493_n

Greetings Loyal Airmen, this week’s Flight Log is about how all our lives are a constant mixture of the past and future as we all travel this road called life. And with a few days of each other, two poignant events in the Air Chief’s life brought that all to clarity. In regards to the past, we were saddened to hear of the passing of former Charlton Editor George Wildman.  Wildman, along with his assistant editor, Bill Pearson was the man responsible for the try-out series Charlton Bullsyes began in the mid-1970s to help give new talent a shot.

ScaryTales

It was in the Charlton Bullseye (issue # 3) that artist Gary Kato and the Air Chief had our first ever comics work published; thus making us pros. The following year they asked us for another tale which ended up being the debut appearance of our Mr. Jigsaw Man of a Thousand Parts in Charlton’s Scary Tales # 38.  And as they say, the rest is history. But what a totally different history it might have been for both of us had it not been for George Wildman.  R.I.P sir, and thanks.

Whereas this time of year is overwhelmed with dreams of the future as colleges and high schools celebrate their new class graduations.  Among them last weekend was the Rocky Mountain High School class of 2016 among which was our grandson, Alex.  Above is a snapshot of him after the even with his older sister Cora on his left and their good friend Tinisha on his right.  Val and the Air Chief, as is all our family, proud beyond words of this young man. And we know he truly has an amazing and bright future ahead of him.  God bless you, Alex.

AmericanFlagImageMemorialDay

Finally we want to wish all you Loyal Airmen a wonderful Memorial Day weekend as we kick off the summer season. But at the same time ask you to take a moment to remember why we celebrate this day.  Unlike Veteran’s Day where we thank all our brave men and women in uniform, past and preset, Memorial Day is what it says, a day to memorialize all those who gave their lives for our country.  Who died to guarantee our freedoms and way of life. We must never forget them, both in out hearts and prayers, especially on this weekend.  May they all rest in God’s loving eternal rest forever.

PLANNING SUMMER EVENTS

  • On 20 May | '2016

2611

Greetings Loyal Airmen.  As most of you are aware, the Air Chief annually does two pulp shows and one comic con.  The pulp shows are the Windy City Pulp & Paper Con which just happened last month in Chicago and PulpFest which happens in Columbus a the end of July. Then come November, we have our Rocky Mountain Con here in Colorado.  Those are again routine appearance whereas it looks like this summer the Air Chief will be expanding his schedule to include a few other local events. The other day we met with an associate of the local Barnes & Noble bookstore here in Fort Collins. After a pleasant chat about our career, we were invited to do two appearance at this store in July.

book-signing

The first of these will be a night time lecture on the history of American pulps and their evolution into comics and today’s New Pulp movement of which Airship 27 Productions is a major player. This will be followed by a book signing.  Then about a week later, we’ll be returning to the store on a Saturday afternoon along with our writing colleague, Todd Jones, do do a presentation on the history of comics and how they are made for young readers and their parents. It looks to be a fun time. We are most grateful for the good people at Barnes & Noble for affording us these opportunities.

RonFlyer

Now the “other” summer event came as an unexpected, although extremely delightful, surprise.  It seems Fort Collins has their own version of what we called “block parties” back east.  On a given day, certain city streets are blocked off by the police and made available to neighborhoods to congregate and have games, showcase local businesses etc. etc. etc. and of course food vendors. Here they are called “Open Street Events,” and lo and behold they are going to have one here in our neighborhood come Sunday June 5th. When the Air Chief learned of this via a letter sent to everyone in the area, we contacted the officials in charge and told them about our being a comic book creator and would they allow us to set a table up with our Mr.Jigsaw books?  Happily they got back to us within a few days totally thrilled by our offer and said we were exactly the kind of participation they looked for in these events.  So the Air Chief contacted his amigo, Rob Davis, and asked him to whip up the promotional flier above, which we hope city officials can add to their further promotional packets.  And we’ve re-ordered more books to assure we have enough on hand when the day arrives.  Now all we have to do is pray it is a gorgeous, sunny day.  All fingers crossed.

Img_1737

And of course it is always great when our new comics arrive in the mail as was the case earlier in the week.  Here we are holding up copies of “Ron Fortier”s Tales of the Macabre.” This one contains three brand new stories by yours truly with art by Gary Kato, Sam Salas and Kurt Belcher.  Then there was “Paradise Falls,” our sci-fi murder mystery with artist John Williams and letterer Warren Montgomery. Both are available on-line from (www.IndyPlanet.com) As ever, thanks for your support.

13100830_10207324678449602_570338781094795161_n

Finally if you are in the Kansas City area this weekend, do your best to hit up Planet Comic Con where our partner artist Rob Davis will be one of the dozens of great guests. That’s Rob above in one of the promo pieces for this great show. Be sure to stop by his table and tell him the Air Chief sent you.

And that’s it for this week Loyal Airmen, as ever, thanks so much for stopping by.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY BLAST

  • On 13 May | '2016

Greetings Loyal Airmen, we sincerely hope many of you got to enjoy Free Comic Book Day at your local comic shops.  The Air Chief had a blast at Gryphon Games & Comics here in Fort Collins, CO.  It was our seventh year as guest there.

IMG_20160507_081651IMG_20160507_134645

Above is a shot of our table set up.  We apologize for it being somewhat blurred, we are never good at taking pictures. Still you do get the general idea. And note by the end of the day our table was a whole lot emptier and the shop had well over 1,500 comic fans come through the doors for this all day event. And as ever you know there will be super fans attired in really cool costumes.  One of these was our pal Alex who showed up mid-afternoon as none other than the original Captain Marvel. What a really great costume. The Air Chief is glad this pix came out clear and sharp.

Air-22HAZ0002

Then towards the end of the day a young man stopped by our table and was mightily impressed with the few Airship 27 pulp titles we had on displayed.  While conversing, he let it slip that he was also a part art artist and then pulled out his smart-phone to show a coloring book he was working on for Colorado State University.  Wow, this fellow had serious talent.  Enough so we talked about his possibly doing some illustrating for us at Airship 27.  Before leaving, he opted to buy a copy of our CAPTAIN HAZZARD – CITADEL OF FEAR to get a feel for what pulps were all about.  Well, apparently he enjoyed the read because first thing this morning he e-mailed us the above quickly rendered sketch of the good Captain. We were blown away.  Looks like we’ve found ourselves another talented illustrations.

Air-125IMG_1447

A little over a month ago we released the first volume of our ALL AMERICAN SPORTS STORIES.  There were lots of sport related titles in the golden age of the pulps and it was a thrilled for us to do this book.  Among the contributors was writer Richard Kellogg shown above holding a copy of the book with his lovely granddaughter, Caitlin.  Richard’s was a personal memoir of a deer hunting experience he had as a young boy with a favorite uncle.  AASS is available at Amazon in both hard copy and on Kindle.

Jase Marshall Collectibles recent added a new album featuring photos of their amazing Brother Bones action figure based on my original pulp hero. Here are just a few images from that album which can be found on Marshall’s Facebook page. He does such amazing work and perfectly captures our creepy Undead Avenger.

And there you have it for this week, Loyal Airmen. Thanks for stopping by and we’ll see you back here next Friday.

LISTENING TO PULPS

  • On 6 May | '2016

Greeting Loyal Airmen, well the weather here in Fort Collins has finally turned around for the better.  Nice to see the sun again after almost a week of clouds and rains.  Okay, this week we are packing up tons of goodies to take with us to Gryphon Games & Comics here in town for the Annual Free Comic Book Day. The folks at this shop do it up big and we always have a great time.  Last year they had over 1,500 people walk through the store.  Here’s hoping tomorrow is even a bigger success.  We hope all our Loyal Airmen will take a break from their busy day to visit and support their own local comic shops.

712ZbUM2vHL._SL300_

Now as all of you know, the good folks at Radio Archives have been adapting our Airship 27 pulp novels and anthologies to audio.  A few days ago they released the third in our Sinbad – The New Voyages.  This one is a full length novel by C.B. Harvey and once again the super talented voice actor Jem Matzan does the reading. With each new book Matzan imbues the characters with so much life, listening to his audibooks is a treat.  Oh, and he also writes a regular blog on how he goes about creating some of the marvelous voices and sound effects in his recording.  You can go to it here.  (http://www.jemmatzan.com/2016/05/sinbad-the-new-voyages-volume-3-the-warriors-of-forever.html)  It is truly fascinating and shows how diverse creative people truly are.

Air-128

And it is also fitting that this past week we released our 5th Volume in the SINBAD – The New Voyages series. This one features stories by Barbara Doran, Lee Houston Jr., Percival Constantine and even one by Ye Old Air Chief himself. That’s right, after creating these great characters, we thought it was high time we got to write their adventures as well.  And it was a blast.  Terry Pavlet provides the above stunning cover with Michael Dean Jackson doing the interior illustrations. It is a great package now available at Amazon in both hard copy and on Kindle.  We hope you’ll check it out.

metropolis460

Okay, now to give you all a sneak-peek at one of the most exciting projects we’ve ever worked on here at Airship 27 Productions; THE TOWERS OF METROPOLIS. Inspired by the classic sci-fi silent film by Fritz Lang, “Metropolis,” our anthology is a prequel and the stories in this book all precede the events which take place in the movie.  The amazing Pedro Cruz, another lover of the film, is now turning in the interior illustrations and the cover is by the great Michael Kaluta.  This is a dream project for the Air Chief and one we think all of you are going to love.  More as we go into production.  Oh, and for those of you sadly unfamiliar with the film the screen shot above is from the movie.

And there you have it for this week, Loyal Airmen. Again, thanks for stopping by and we’ll see you back here next Friday.

BEST PULP SHOW EVER

  • On 29 Apr | '2016

IMG_20160423_094356

Greetings Loyal Airmen, we’ve got tons of things to share with you this week and all are about our amazing experiences at this year’s Windy City Pulp & Paper Con in Chicago that went on over the weekend. We’d told last week we’d have a full report for you and so sit back and enjoy.  Above is Ye Old Air Chief and Art Director Rob Davis having set up our tables and ready for the show to get rolling.

IMG_20160425_1641394_rewindIMG_20160425_161233

Friday night the 7th Annual Pulp Factory Awards were handed out and Airship 27 Productions took four of the five categories. This year the awards were moderated by Pulp Factory members Gordon Dymowski and Van Allen Plexico and they were responsible for designing the beautiful acrylic awards you see above.  Winning Best Pulp Novel went to our friend Paul Bishop for his gripping police mystery, “The Lie Catchers.” Having reviewed it last year, the Air Chief recommends you all go out an buy a copy. It is that good. The book was published by our friends at Pro Se Productions.

DerrickFergusonDerrick-Ferguson

Best Short Story went to our pal Derrick Ferguson for his tale, “Voodah of Thunder Mountain,” illustrated by Barry McClain (see illo above) and appeared in “The Legends of New Pulp Fiction,” which went on to take the award for Best Anthology Collection.  Having won the Pulp Ark two weeks ago, this books becomes the only new pulp title to win both awards.  That’s saying quite a bit.

IMG_20160422_210855_2CS

Whereas our own Rob Davis won the award for Best Interior Illustrations for his art in our “Sherlock Holmes – Consulting Detective Vol 7,” it was his second Pulp Factory Award win.  Above is the Air Chief holding the award for Best Anthology and Rob proudly displaying his.

Air-121

The Best Pulp Cover went to Czech artist Marco Turini for Airship 27 Production’s “Bass Reeves – Frontier Marshal,” which was our last title of 2015.  The Air Chief doesn’t even know if Marco has been notified of his win yet but will get on that immediately after writing this Flight Log.  We always knew that cover was a winner.

IMG_20160424_123358

The true fun of these shows is meeting fellow creators and it was a pleasure to finally hook up with young Jaime Ramos, one of the two Assistant Editors who helped up put together “Legends of New Pulp Fiction.” The other was Todd Jones.  Well, Jaime finally came to the con and we had a blast sharing a fun panel with him on Sunday morning about how that amazing came together.  Along with Jaime and the Air Chief, we were joined by Doug Klauba who painted and of course Rob Davis, the book’s designer and Tommy Hancock, the man for whom the book was a benefit moderated.  What a great panel. All of us giving our audience a lot of behind the scenes stories of how that giant tome all came together.  Fellow writer, Andy Fix, was wise to bring a tape recorder and the entire hour long panel will be posted to his own podcast in a week or two.  We will be sure to post the link right here so all you Loyal Airmen can listen to it should you desire.

13055318_10208385442570087_8933594812615157573_n

One of the traditions we adhere to at every Windy City show is the Sunday morning Pulp Factory breakfast at a local eatery.  Above left to right, in a group selfie, are Gene Moyers, the Air Chief, Rob Davis (peeking in) and Van Plexico.

13087795_10208385733017348_8832730722855679867_n

Five minutes after snapping the first photo, artist Doug Klauba arrived and Van immediately got him into this picture.  Those breakfast get togethers are so much fun.

Sitting here writing this all out, the Air Chief is doing a mental check list of all our great friends we hooked up with over the weekend and my apologies if we forget anyone here.  Martin Gram, Doug Klauba, Van Plexico, Joe Gentile, William Patrick Maynard, Tommy Hancock, David White, John Bodnar, B.C. Bell, Gene Moyers, Jim Beard, Jaime Ramos, Michael Black, Bob Mendenhall, Andy and Claire Fix, Jeff and Lisa Fournier, Doug Ellis, Mike Chomko, Ed Hulse, Will Murray, Matt Moring, Lance Stahlberg, Gordon Dymowski.  If we forgot anyone, and we’re sure we must of, our apologies.  What a great group of friends and fellow creators. Every time the Air Chief goes to this show, he leaves all charged up to start new projects. We tend to inspire each other all the time. And believe us, several new pulp projects were hatched over the weekend that you will all be seeing by the end of the year. Trust us, it is good stuff.

Of course one of the best results of attending a show like this one is the positive creative energy that gets fired up and then folks go home with all kinds of ideas for new pulp projects.  Here at Airship 27 Productions we’re pleased to announce the start of a second anthology volume featuring the most bizarre pulp hero of them all, the Purple Scar. The book will contain four new Scar stories by Gen Moyers, Paul Findley, Erik Franklin and David Noe with the amazing artist Marco Santiago providing the interior illustrations. Those are his sketches of the character above. Hopefully we can get this together and out by Fall or early Winter. We’ll keep you posted.

And there you go, Loyal Airmen.  Thanks for stopping by as ever.

Rob&Ron

Greetings Loyal Airmen, as you read this week’s Flight Log, the Air Chief and Chief Engineer Rob Davis are at the 2016 Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention in beautiful Lombard, Illinois, just outside of Chicago.  Every year this show is a blast and we get to see old friends and make tons of new ones.  On Friday night the Air Chief will once again be hosting the Pulp Factory Awards presentations. Rest assured we’ll post the list of winners here next week.  And then on New Pulp Sunday we have all those great panels we mentioned here last week.  As you can see this is a busy, fun time us and hundreds of pulp fans.  Please, if you are anywhere near the area, come on down and join in.

And while on the subject of awards, the 2016 Pulp Ark Awards were announced last night and I’m thrilled to say two Airship 27 titles were winners.  Our giant benefit anthology for Tommy Hancock, “Legends of New Pulp Fiction” won in the Best Anthology/Collection category and Best Pulp Novel went to Micah Harris’ awesome “Ravenwood Stepson of Mystery” novel, “Return of the Dugpa. Micah is a terrific writer and we couldn’t be any happier for him.  And to ALL the people who made that incredible anthology such a huge success, we tip our pulp fedora.

As you Loyal Airmen will remember, last week we talked about some of the “jungle” movies that would soon be at your local cinemas.  Well yesterday Val and the Air Chief went to see Disney new live action “Jungle Book” and we absolutely loved it.  Director John Favreau may have just given all of us his masterpiece.  Not afraid to use today’s technology to enhance his narrative, he gives a wonderful story so amazing and beautiful, both a feast for the eyes and the heart.  The voice actors are magnificent in their respective roles and the young boy playing Mowgli, is simply brilliant. We recommend this movie highly, though parents should see it first before little ones under six. It has a few tense scenes that might prove a bit too scary for kids

Okay, time for the Air Chief to get finished packing.  Hope to see you in Chicago. Come back next week for a full report on the con.  And thanks ever for stopping by.
