WONDER WOMAN…REALLY?

  • On 6 Dec | '2013

Greeting Loyal Airmen, it looks like winter had finally hit the country in a big way. We here in Colorado had our first real snowstorm of the year this past week, snow from the west and cold from Canada landed right on top of us living us with a carpet of white and sub-zero temps the past few days. Now this front is moving east and we hope all our Loyal Airmen living on the coast bundle up good.

Earlier this week the good people at Warner Brothers Studios announced that Wonder Woman, DC Comics famous Amazonian warrior character created back in the 1940s, would make an appearance in the new Superman vs Batman movie now in pre-production.  This is considered a sequel to the somewhat successful film released earlier this year with Henry Cavill in the role of Superman.  Now over a month ago it was announced the new movie, due in 2015, would feature Batman making this the very first time in live films that DC's two iconic heroes would meet.  Ben Affleck was later announced to play Batman; no comment.  The Air Chief was more than willing to reserve judgment until the film came out.  But then rumors began circulating that Wonder Woman might make an appearance also.  Now our thought here is, isn't this starting to crowd the picture?  Consider the entire returning cast of supporting players from MAN OF STEEL to include Diane Lane and Amy Adams are all coming back.  Now they want to ad yet another hero character meaning another origin story will have to be whipped up before the action can get going.  How long is this movie going to be.

Then a few days ago WB announced their choice to plane the famous female super hero, Gal Godat, a little known Israeli actor who appeared in the Fast & Furious movies.  Then the pictures of her surfaced the Air Chief had one of the biggest laughs he's had all year.  A tall, skinny, anorexic model is going to play the battling amazon?  In what world are these people living?  Certainly not ours.

From the time she first burst onto the pages of DC comic, Wonder Woman has always been portrayed as statuesque, voluptuous, strong and dynamic.  Which of those adjuectives suits Ms. Godat?  We look at pictures of her and want to sit her down and give her a good meal.  And please, do not give us that argument that she has several years to train and bulk up.  On what frame?  And is she going to get breast enlargement.  Sorry if we sound sexist here, but the truth is Wonder Woman is well endowed and has LOTS of “wonderful” curves in all the right places.  Ms. Godat is all bones and angles.  Oh, you say, well, its about her ability to act.  Really?  Well listen up people, Meryl Streep can act but that doesn't mean she should be cast to play Wonder Woman.  This whole casting is a joke and proof once again that when it comes to big budget comic book based movies, Marvel whips DC every single time.  Sigh.

On a much happier note, work continues on the new SPIDER – DOMINO LADY comic book series the Air Chief is writing for Moonstone Comics with artist Michael Dorman providing the fantastic artwork. Above is a sneak-peak as his interpretation of the classic pulp avenger, the Spider.  Believe Loyal Airmen, the Air Chief is wound-for-sound about this project.  More as it develops.

Like wise we are very, VERY excited about the early pages done by Colorado artist, Kevin A Johnson on our new BLACK LION graphic novel project.  See sample above.  Kevin's a gifted artist and is doing such a great job bringing our script to visual life.

And there you have it, Loyal Airmen, for yet another week. Again, stay well, warm and in this season of giving, go out and do something nice for someone.  Surprise somebody with an unexpected hug or kiss. They'll feel happier and so will you.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

  • On 29 Nov | '2013

Greeting Loyal Airmen and a sincere thanks for your stopping by here on the day after Thanksgiving, er as it has been distastefully called in our materially obsessed world, Black Friday.  But before ranting on that particular tag, which always leaves a bad taste in the Air Chief's mouth, let's remunerate about our wonderful Thanksgiving.

This is one of those special days when we focus out attention on the real things that do matter in our lives, our family and friends.  After all it is the people in your life that actual enrich it and make it worthwhile, not the cars, the multiple iPads, or other such foolish toys we use today to dull our senses.  People, real people.
Here at Hangar 27 we were thinking about each and every one of you and how there would be no Airship 27 Productions without you. That's not just a throw away phrase, it's the truth.  We could produce all the books in the world but without you to buy them, read and enjoy them, what would be the point?  Zip. Nada. So believe me from the bottom of my heart with the Air Chief says THANK YOU.

Valerie wasted no time yesterday locking down the kitchen and starting work on this year's turkey dinner.  All too quickly the house was filled with such insane wonderful smells, everyone's stomach were soon anticipating another sumptuous meal.  Meanwhile son Alan and daughter-in-law Nicole were on the road to pick up our one guest, Matt.  He's a soldier and our granddaughter's boyfriend.  He was scheduled to have duty and at the last minute was told he didn't have to report in for the entire day.  Which left him alone and no way to get home.  When Alan learned this, he smiled, grabbed the car keys and headed for the door.  No one in our circle gets left alone on Thanksgiving.  Cora, our granddaughter works in a bakery at a local supermarket and had no idea that when she got home yesterday, Matt would be here waiting for her.

Having been politely thrown out of  the kitchen for “being in the way,” the Air Chief retreated to another room to while away few hours with a movie.  From our vast DVD collection, we opted for THE PERFECT GAME, a sports film released in 2008 that tells the true story of the Mexican Little League from the poor town of Monterey that won the Little League Championship in 1957 and the young boy who threw the only no-hitter (a perfect game) in the history of that series.  This is a story of faith, hard work and determination, of the ultimate underdogs proving any dream can come true if you want it with all your heart and soul.  The Air Chief loves positive spots movie, they inspire us to be better people and this is one of the best.  It was an excellent choice to get us in  the right Thanksgiving spirit.

Towards the second half of the movie, we set it on pause, as Valerie took a break from cooking and together we made a few phone calls back east; the first to our mother in New Hampshire.  Gabrielle Fortier is now a spry 89 and doing just fine.  She is a resident at a wonderful senior home and had just come back to her room after enjoying a huge turkey dinner.  Mom is a joy and was as ever happy to hear from us.  God did bless us with such an amazing family, that phone call meant the world to all of us.

Finally the afternoon wore on, Alan and Nicole returned with Matt, Cora ended her work shift and grandson Alex appeared from his own room ready to chow down.  Our dinner was simply fantastic as Valerie once again outdid herself.  All of us left the table a few pounds heavier.  Ha.  We aren't kidding.

That was our Thanksgiving.  Later in the evening, unable to complete avoid the Black Friday temptations, Valerie and the kids headed out to see if it were possible to find some early Christmas gifts, leaving the Air Chief to hold down the fort.  They are too familiar with our thoughts on post-Thanksgiving shopping and we were more than happy to simply kick back, have a cup of coffee and find yet a second movie to wrap up the day.  This one we found on cable.

WORDS is a recent release about a struggling young writer played by Bradley Cooper who by accident finds a fifty year old lost manuscript with no name on it.  Touched by what he reads, he becomes haunted by the book because he realizes it is far superior than anything he himself could ever write.  Thus he falls to temptation and plagiarizes the book, selling to a publisher as his own.  When the novel becomes an overnight success, his entire life changes for he believe is the better.  But of course it is all based on a lie and those have a way of eventually being exposed.  Cooper's denouement happens when an old man, deftly played by Jeremy Irons, confronts him one day in the park and reveals himself as the true author of the manuscript.

WORDS captivated us completely as being a writer, the Air Chief understands the value, the power and ultimately the beauty of words.  Over a lifetime we've written lots of them in one form or another, be it comics scripts, articles, short stories or a few novels here and there.  We write because the ability to do so is a gift from God and not to use would be a sin.  Yet, at the same time, we are constantly aware of our limitations and the cold hard truths that our talents only reach a certain level.  We've no illusions we will ever be Stephen King or John Grisham on many of those amazing writers we admire and are in awe of.  And yet we do plod on, even with our own meager skills hoping always that with each new story we do in fact get just a little better than the last time.  It's all any creative soul can aspire to and leave the rest to God.

Which is why, on this Thanksgiving, we were moved by this brief self-reflection and once again reminded how much we do have and should never ever take for granted.  We pray all of you had a great day and wish you all a truly great holiday season ahead.

Thanks ever,
Ron – Over & Out!

BLACK LION

  • On 22 Nov | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen, on a frigid Colorado morning.  We've finally gotten our first snowfall of the year and this morning temps fell way-way below freezing.  Ouch.  Work at Hangar 27 continues at a frantic rate so that we can shout down operations for Thanksgiving coming up next week and all enjoy this holiday of gratitude.  But before that, we have a really awesome announcement this week.

Several years ago the Air Chief had an idea for a new comic book based on the exploits of former Navy Seal Jamal Lyon, codename BLACK LION.  We discussed it with artist amigo Brian Level and he was kind enough to do up sketches of the character, including the one above.  Unfortunately Brian just couldn't commit to do the actual graphic novel having other commitments.  So our search began to find the right artist to bring this character to graphic life.

SGT KEVIN A. JOHNSON & THE AIR CHIEF

As you'll recall from our entry of a few week's back, the Air Chief has the recent pleasure of meeting a former Army Sgt. with 20 years of service to his country, Kevin A. Johnson.  Kevin is now attending art college in Denver and during that momentous meeting, Kevin showed us his portfolio of comics work he had done many, many years ago.  We were blown away with his level of talent and brought up the subject of BLACK LION.   Kevin signed on immediately and in now in the process of drawing the first chapter.

After he did up a pencil sketch of the character, we enlisted super inker Mark Stegbauer to join the team and letterer extraordinary, Warren Montgomery.  This morning Kevin sent along the thumbnails for the first three pages and the Air Chief couldn't be more excited.

The plan is to produce the book and post it as a webstrip at the popular COMIC RELATED website on a weekly basis until completed.  Then we will be self-publishing the entire graphic novel.  Stay tuned, this is a project near and dear to the Air Chief.

And that wraps up this week's Flight Log, Loyal Airmen.  We want to take this opportunity to thank eavh and everyone one of you stopping by every week and your loyal support of our endeavors.  All of you are special to us here at Hangar 27.  God bless and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

ONE SUPER BUSY WEEK

  • On 15 Nov | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen,  this past week has been one amazing roller coaster ride for the Air Chief, in mostly good ways with one major speed bump along the way.  We've tons of good stuff to share with you, so let's get with it.

Last weekend we were guest at the first ever Rocky Mountain Con in Denver and we had a blast.  Met so many wonderful fans and some colleagues for the very first time.  One, artist Kevin Johnson, painted our second SINBAD The New Voyages anthology and meeting him was a blast. Enough so that we've cooked up a very special comic book project we are going to be working on. More as that develops. As ever there were so many costume players on hand, including the Ghostbusters above who stopped by my table. The dude on the far right is my pal Alex Eggleston.

Now remember that bump in the road we talked about earlier?  Well a few days after con we were working in the office on another pulp title when our 15 years old computer up and died on us. The big fear of any production outfit like ours.  Happily the hard-drive survived, maintaining all our files both text and photos.  We had to be shut down for a few days while we bought a new PC and had the data transferred but now all is well, we're up and running again on a much faster and more efficient machine.

If you'll recall, a few months ago we announced that Dark Horse Comics would soon be releasing a brand new edition of our old TERMINATOR BURNING EARTH mini-series for the defunct Now Comics. Well that beautiful book collected as a graphic novel hit the comic shelves this past week and we are thrilled. It features the first ever comic works of super-start Alex Ross.  Above is my good buddy, fellow writer, Todd Jones and the Air Chief, at the local comic shop here in Fort Collins showing off a copy of the book.  Word I'm getting is they are flying off the shelves, so make sure you grab one before they are all gone.  So many of our fans have told us over the years how much they wanted this book.  Now is your chance.

At the start of the week Airship 27 Productions released our newest pulp title, the first ever Brother Bones full length novel, SIX DAYS OF THE DRAGON, and no, we didn't write it.  This is a character we created almost a decade ago and he's appeared in a half-dozen short stories that we published in a collection which won over many pulp fans.  Among them was writer Roman Leary who over the years became one of the characters biggest fans. Enough so that he proposed this idea of writing a Brother Bones novel for us. After reading his detailed plot, the Air Chief was thrilled by the story and gave him the green light to proceed.  Award winning artist Rob Moran signed on to do the book's 9 black and white interior illustrations and the amazing cover seen above, which was colored by artist Shannon Hall. The book is quickly becoming the best selling Airship 27 Productions title ever released.  It is now available at Amazon both as a hard copy and in Kindle.  We hope you'll check it out.  Roman tells an awesome pulp tale you don't want to miss.

And our final news of the week is that we've been recruited by Moonstone books out of Chicago to write a brand new black and white pulp comic book series.  It is called THE SPIDER – DOMINO LADY and teams these two classic pulp heroes.  The book will be 22 pages and appear bi-monthly.  Our run begins with issue # 3 which should be out early next year.  The artist is twenty year veteran, Michael Dorman who extremely talented and having a blast working our our first script which we turned in a week ago. Stay tuned Loyal Airmen, as we'll let you know more as the official release date becomes available to us.  We've written prose stories of both these great characters but this is the very first time we'll get to do comic adventures and we couldn't be more thrilled.

And there you have it Loyal Airmen, a ton of cool stuff as we work our way towards Thanksgiving.  Thanks for stopping by as ever and hopefully one of these days we'll be guest at a con near you.

PC CRASHES – ZEPPELIN FLIES!

  • On 10 Nov | '2013

Greeting Loyal Airmen, been on heck of a busy week for the Air Chief.  This Flight Log is a few days late because of what happened.

First of all the Air Chief turned 67 this past Tuesday, Nov 5th. A heartfelt thanks to all who sent such wonderful Happy Birthday Wishes.

The two days later our PC crashed.  Yup, after nearly 12 years of faithful service, it just crashed. So we were left scrambling to get a new one and back on line again. Happily none of our working files were lost and as you can see we are back on-line better than ever.

During this chaos, we actually launched our newest pulp anthology, ZEPPELIN TALES Vol One. See the gorgeous cover above by artist Mike Fyles.  It features a short story by Jim Beard and a long novella by Ian Watson, with interior illustrations by Pedro Cruz.  The book is available at our regular website as well as Amazon.com in both hard copy and on Kindle.  We hope you'll check it out as ever.

And finally, today, Sat. 9th the Air Chief was a guest at the Rocky Mountain Con in Denver, its a two day show and we had a blast meeting lots of great fans today. Tomorrow we are up early to drive back down and do it all over again.  Meaning we hope to see you many of you there and now its time we called it a day. Thanks as ever for stopping by.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

  • On 1 Nov | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen, most of you will be reading this Flight Log on Nov 1st, All Saints Day, the day after HALLOWEEN, still, we hope you all had a great time at one of our favorite holidays of the year.  Today is Mom's birthday, she turns 89 and is doing really well, for which we thank God.  The Air Chief will be turning 67 next Tuesday, Nov 5th, Guy Fawkes day in England. Perhaps that explains some of our quirkiness.  Ha.  Okay, let's get this week's Flight Log rolling along.

Joy, of joys, our beloved Red Sox last night won the 2012 Baseball World Series.  The first time this victory took place in their home stadium of Fenway Park in front of 38,000 fans.  We were watching on TV and couldn't contain our excitement at their taking the championship again, that is three times in ten years.  Our baseball caps also get tipped to the marvelous Saint Louis Cardinals who were great competitors and deserved to be the National League champs. Their a class act.

Now when the Red Sox ended their 2012 season at the bottom of the American League East, no one in the world would have ever predicted they would come back the very following year and win the World Series. But somehow General Manager Ben Cherington has a plan to recruit veteran old players who knew how to play the game right, who had a positive attitude, who were good teammates.  To make this plan work he and Red Sox management brought former pitching coach John Farrell to lead the charge.  And that dream began on the first day of Spring Training down in Ft. Myers, Florida.  These Dirt-Dogs, old and new, came together, they bonded and became a team, not a collective of super stars, but a real team, a group of like-minded players to supported each through through and long and grueling season, all with a common goal, to win the World Series.  And they did it!!  Nuff said!

On the creative front, Airship 27 Productions has released its newest pulp anthology featuring another little know classic pulp hero, THE CRIMSON MASK.  He's featured in four brand new stories in this volume beautifully covered by artist Andy Fish.  You can pick up a copy at Amazon.com or if you prefer, get it on Kindle.  As ever, we thank you so much for your continued support.  It looks like we'll be setting a new production record by the end of the year.  Last year we put out 16 books.  THE CRIMSON MASK is number 14 and we've still got two full months ahead of us.  Stay tuned, Loyal Airmen.

Over the last few years many of the Air Chief's fans have suggested we should be writing new Green Hornet stories for Dynamite Comics, the outfit who now has the rights.  People fondly remember the old GH series we did for Now Comics (a cover is spotlighted above).  Now there is a program out there called Kickstarter that was launched a few years ago in which people wanted to publish their comic projects would go on line and ask people to contribute money to help them achieve their goals. It became extremely popular and many comics have been produced via this route.  The Air Chief isn't a big fan of such “begging” and that's why we've gone the self-publishing route with most of our own titles over the past few years with Redbud Studio.  Still fans kept pushing the idea of our working on the Green Hornet for Dynamite.

Which was when the light bulb went off in our old noodle.  Why didn't we start our own version of a Kickstarter program, but one in which we didn't ask anyone for a single penny but rather their support in starting a letter writing campaign to Dynamite directly asking them to recruit the Air Chief to write the Green Hornet for them.  We got this going on our Facebook page at the start of the week and have been humbled by the overwhelming support the idea picked up almost immediately.  In fact there has been several on-line podcast that have mentioned this campaign and urged their listeners to sign on.  If you Loyal Airmen out there would like to join in, again, all we ask is that you write Dynamite Comics, either at their Faebook page or their own website and ask them sign up RON FORTIER TO WRITE THE GREEN HORNET.

Will they listen?  Who knows?  But we'd like to think if the numbers of letters that arrived in their boxes climbed to the hundreds, they would at least take notice. Chuckle.  One just never knows.

And there you have it for another Fall Week at Hangar 27, Loyal Airmen. As ever, thanks for stopping by and we'll see you back here next week.

CARTOON NETWORK SUCKS

  • On 25 Oct | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen, here we are, one week away from Halloween and the past week has been a mixed bag of good and bad events.  We'll kick off with what we consider the bad and then move into the good stuff.

As of six short months ago, the Cartoon Network, an outfit owned by Warner Brothers, was running two extremely well crafted superhero animated series, YOUNG JUSTICE and THE GREEN LANTERN.  We were a fan of both and did our best to catch them every single week.  Then, as if out of the blue, Cartoon Network announced they were canceling both series and would be replaced them with a new, edgy Batman series to be called BEWARE THE BATMAN and a silly, goofy, kid-aimed show called GO TEEN TITANS.  We were really upset, as were thousands of other comic fans by this news, but there was really nothing we could about it, the network wasn't about to listen to us, their audience.  So we bid farewell to two really great shows.

Eventually the new shows premiered and we made it a point of watching BEWARE THE BATMAN and came away enjoyed it tremendously.  They were employing the same kind of modern CGI animation that had been used in THE GREEN LANTERN series and were offering up a new, tougher version of both the Dark Knight and his faithful butler Alfred.  Never mind Katana, an Asian martial artist, joined the show as a young protege to Batman.  We instantly became fans.  What about GO TEEN TITANS?  We watched five minutes of an episode ….and wanted to cry. Again, its intended solely for the five and six year old crowd.

So after only a few months, guess what Cartoon Network went and canceled today?  Yup…BEWARE THE BATMAN is kaput, just like that.  Whereas they are keeping GO TEEN TITANS.  Really?  Well, that pretty much our days watching Cartoon Network.  Over the past few years the shows have declined horribly in quality, originality and are just silly affairs, again, directed at those viewers just out of diapers.  Truly a sad state of affairs.  We have to wonder why the folks at Warners Animation have stood by and let this all happened.  None of it makes any sense at all.

Now for the truly good stuff.  We'd been hearing tons of good things about the new sci-fi movie GRAVITY and this past week, Valerie and the Air Chief finally got to see it.  WOW.  It just blew us both away and now, days after viewing it, some of its images still haunt us.  Thanks to a brilliant script, directing and outstanding special effects, this is one of those movies you HAVE to see at least once on the big giant silver screen.  It is about as close to being in outer space as the Air Chief will ever get, though we would jump at the chance, even after seeing the film of the ultimate battle for survival.  Over the past thirty years it seems Hollywood has forgotten how to make “real” science fiction movies that revolve around the conquest of space and mankind's quest to explore the mysterious universe in which we abide.  Ever since ALIEN, all space themed movies have been monster-movies of one kind or another until we've become totally sick to death of all of them.  GRAVITY harkens back to the early 1950s movies that focused on that quest for the starts and inspired young movie goers.  GRAVITY does that beautifully, despite its honest depiction of the true hostile environment of space.  There is still beauty and wonder among the starts and we were meant to explore it.  Finally, Sandra Bulloch deserves another Oscar for her gutsy portrayal here.  It is magnificent.  If you haven't seen GRAVITY yet, don't wait.

And finally this past week Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for the second CAPTAIN AMERICA movie coming in 2014.  Sub-titled WINTER SOLDIER, it picks up on Steve Rogers' life after the events of THE AVENGERS movie and how he must adapt to this new modern world he finds himself in .  The first CAPTAIN AMERICA movie remains one of the Air Chief's all time favorites and Chris Evans perfectly captured the every-man essence of the character.  Now, via this trailer, it looks like the action gets amped up to the max, as Cap must deal with new threats to America while at the same time confronting an old ally turned enemy.  This looks to be another solid winner, comic fans.  We can't wait.

And finally, the World Series kicked off this week and our beloved Red Sox, playing in Fenway Park, took game one from the Saint Louis Cardinals.  This looks to be a grand, equally matched battle and a great way to end the 2013 baseball series.  Hope you are enjoying it as well.

THE QUEEN OF ESCAPES

  • On 17 Oct | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen, we hope you are all enjoying the Fall season and getting ready for the big Halloween party just around the corner.  The Air Chief totally loves this time of year.  Oh, yeah.  Another thing we have always been huge fans of were the old movie cliffhanger serials produced by such companies as Republic Studio, who did the best serials ever.   So it is with much pleasure we are announcing our newest pulp title.

Months ago, writer Curtis Ferlund submitted his manuscript for a novel called THE QUEEN OF ESCAPES and it was his homage to those classic cliffhanger serials.  The book deals with a Hollywood film crew going into the wilds of the Amazon jungles of Brazil to shoot a serial, unaware they have crossed into a forbidden area inhabited by a tribe of deadly Amazons.  Soon it is up to the hero of the book, the stuntwoman, to warn her friends and save the day.  Written like those old melodramas, each chapter leaves our heroine in danger and has the readers wondering how she is ever going to survive all these death traps.  Sincerely, its a great book and we at Airship 27 Productions were only too happy to pick it up.  Then we assigned the ever talented James Lyle to do nine gorgeous interior illustrations and the cover painting, inspired by one of those illos was done by the amazing Andy Fish.  This is Andy's first ever work for Airship 27 but we guarantee you, it won't be his last.  THE QUEEN OF ESCAPES is now on sale at Amazon in both hard copy and on their Kindle.  We hope you'll give it a try.

One of the many books we now have in production is our first PURPLE SCAR anthology.  The Purple Scar was a little known classic pulp hero from the golden age of the pulps.  He was a doctor whose police officer brother had been gunned by criminals, then they threw acid in his face and dumped him the river. By the time the poor man's body had been recovered, his face as a thing of horror.  Our hero, being a plastic surgeon, made a death-masks of it…then putting it on, became the avenging angel known as the Purple Scar.  What is unique about the character is that he combines elements both from the pulps and horror mags into one gruesome characters.  Luckily while on-line, we discovered the art of Canadian Richard Serrao and knew immediately he was the one artist to capture what we envisioned for this kind of book.  Happily Richard signed on and has been hard at work doing the illustrations for the first two Purple Scar stories of the four that will be part of volume one.  Meanwhile, Richard has become so fond of the character, between doing the actual story illos, he has started whipping up what he calls “bonus” pieces and has been so kind as to share them with us….like the great piece above. Our plans are to include these extra illustrations as a special bonus feature in the back of the book when it goes to press.  Stay tuned.

On other fronts, the Air Chief has been extremely busy with new writing chores.  We currently almost done writing the comic script to MR. JIGSAW # 12 and have just started work on a new pulp story, The Lady in Red, which will appear in our second collection of BROTHER BONES stories, that you can expect to see early next year.  Before that we'll be putting an original Brother Bones novel, THE SIX DAYS OF THE DRAGON, by writer Roman Leary.  Believe the Air Chief, its special.

At the same time we have begun assembling new pulp comic strips for a third issue of AIRSHIP 27 presents ALL STAR PULP COMICS which we hope to have out early next year.  One of the strips to be included will be a brand new Ki-Gor Jungle Lord by artist Sam Salas and writer Dave Beers.  Looks to be a fun strip by their pin-up above.

Appearance wise, we will be guest at the Rocky Mountain Comic Con takes place Nov. 13 – 14, at a hotel just outside the Denver International Airport.  Proceeds from the con are all going to the Aurora Fund to help those victims who survived the tragic movie house shooting over a year ago.  It looks to be fun show and we'll post more about it as it draw near.

And there you have it for this week, Loyal Airmen. Thanks as ever for stopping by and for your continued support of all our humble efforts.

OUR AD IN DYNAMITE COMIC

  • On 11 Oct | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen.  It looks like the month of October had started off on some really good notes for us here at Airship 27 Productions.  As you may recall, last year we debut our first Captain Action novel, “Riddle of the Glowing Men” by Jim Beard.  Well a few weeks ago Dynamite Comics, one of the fastest, most popular comic companies out there rolled out the first issue of their new Captain Action comic series titled – CODENAME – ACTION.  And thanks to our good friends at Captain Action Enterprises, the comic featured a full page ad in the back for our pulp book.

Considering the thousands of comic fans who picked up this premier issue, we are thrilled that this may be introducing Airship 27 Productions to whole new audiences of possible readers.  All fingers crossed. Oh, and for the record, we thought the first issue of the comic was terrific.  Great story and art both.  You really should pick up a copy.  Tell them the Air Chief sent you.

Another of well received titles of the past few years was the first Challenger Storm novel, “Isle of Blood,” by Don Gates with art by the legendary Michael Kaluta. For his efforts, Kaluta picked up both the Best Pulp Cover and Best Interior Illustration wins from the Pulp Factory Awards; the first artist to ever do so.  Well, both he and Gates have been very busy working on the sequel, “Curse of Poseidon,” and above is one of the nine new spot illustrations Kaluta is doing for this second Challenger Storm.  Stay tuned for more news as it moves up the production line.

What with the Fall here, so arrives the new season of TV shows, both old and new.  We've already ranted about how much we are enjoying Marvel's AGENTS OF SHIELD.  Well this past week a returning favorite, ARROW, launched its second season and it was fantastic.  Appearing for an all too brief cameo in episode one was one of DC's most popular female heroes, Black Canary.  We only got a glimpse of her kicking bad-guy butt, yet it was still enough to have us applauding and cheering.  Looking like ARROW is truly off to a grand start this year.

And so that you don't think October only means comics and TV to us here, at Hangar 27, don't forget we are baseball fans rooting for our beloved Red Sox…..who this week, after winning the Division title, went on to beat the tenacious Tampa Rays (3 games to 1) for the right to battle this coming week-end for the American League Championship Pennant against the Detroit Tigers.  The winner of course going on to face the National League Champs in the World Series.  After last years abysmal failure, the miraculous rebound of the Red Sox has electrified the sports world and we couldn't be happier.  This is a tough, gritty team that never quits and we've come to admire them greatly.  GO SOX!!

And there you have it for another week, Loyal Airmen, as ever thanks for stopping by.

  • On 4 Oct | '2013

Greetings Loyal Airmen, well here we are into the month of October and one of my favorite holidays is just around the corner, Halloween.  Always love planning what treats we're going to have ready for all the little ghost and goblins who come around.  Have so many fond memories of walking around my home town of Somersworth, NH, dressed up in a crude home-made costume with a huge pillow case as our carry bag and we'd usually get home with it at least half filled with candy. Yum.

Okay, still plenty of time before it gets here, in the meantime we've gotten a new pulp book out.

This past week saw the release of our fourth anthology starring the classic pulp hero, JIM ANTHONY – Super Detective.  Since starting Airship 27 Productions, one of our primary goals was to shine the spotlight on some of the lesser known pulp heroes and Jim Anthony falls into that category.  This volume contains four brand new stories of the hero who was half-Irish, half-Comanche and All American, as written by Frank Byrns, Erwin K.Roberts, Joel Jenkins and Mark Justice.  It has interior illustrations by Michael Neno and a beautiful cover by Eric Meador.  This is Eric's first work for Airship 27 and we truly hope it won't be his last.   The book is available now at Amazon.com as both a hard copy and e-book for their Kindle. We hope you'll check it out.

A week from today thousands of comic fans from all over the country will be converging on New York city for the big annual New York Comic Con.  And no, the Air Chief will not be one of them.  Ha. We did the show several years ago and had a blast.  But we do have two really good Colorado amigos who will be there and premiering the release of the first issue of their new vampire horror comic, STAKES.  See that wicked cool cover above.  Written by Todd Jones with art by Felipe Echevarria, STAKES is an old fashion vampire thriller and not one of these new modern day wimpy, sparkly vampires.  This is raw, tough, savage stuff that is a real adrenalin rush.  The guys will be at the big NYCC and have a limited number of this preview special edition (100 total) sell and sign for you lucky enough to be there.  You can find Todd and Felipe at table M-8 in Artist Alley.  So if you are going to the con, do stop by and tell them the Air Chief sent you.

And that's it for this week, Loyal Airmen.  As ever, thanks for stopping by.  We hope you are enjoying the Fall. It truly is a beautiful time of year.
