NEW PULP IS HERE!!
- On 12 May | '2011
Greeting Loyal Airmen, to another early Flight Log. It's Wednesday as we write this. Tomorrow afternoon the Air Chief is flying out to Little Rock and then its on to Batesville, Arkansas for the premier of Pulp Ark, a brand new pulp convention. Which is a good time to mention the New Pulp Movement. For the past six years the Air Chief has been reporting we are witnessing a renaissance in pulp literature. Enough so that six years ago there were maybe five publishers putting out new pulp fiction and art. Today there are over a dozen with more coming into the field every year. Why this new interest in an old literary genre? Primarily because pulp fiction is solid, escapist entertainment which was born during the height of the Great Depression to bring some relief to weary people wanting to forget their troubles for even only a few hours. Today, academics as well as fans, are recognizing pulp literature for its contribution to society pre-World War II as something truly unique. From this love of the old pulps has emerged a New Pulp, this one spearheaded by today's talented writers and artists of wanting to recapture that magic and push it boldly into the future.
Recently Tommy Hancock of Pro Se Productions coined the term New Pulp and one of his artists pals drew up the logo you see above. Almost immediately after its creation, a half dozen publishers, to include Airship 27 Productions signed on to help spread the movement by using the tag on their titles. It is our hopes that it will quickly become a recognizable brand signifying only the finest in both fiction and art in this exciting new literature form. We hope all you Loyal Airmen will both encourage and support the New Pulp movement.

And finally, before signing off, we wanted to tip our hats to the comic fans of Fort Collins, Colorado, who came to the Gryphon Games & Comics Shop last Saturday during Free Comic Book Day and helped us celebrate this hobby we all love so dearly. Among the many guests on hand to greet fans were yours truly, artists Felipe Echevarria, Jeff Herndon and Lee Oaks plus writers Todd Jones & Mike Baron. A special thanks also goes to shop owners Liana & Sherman Sanders for inviting us to participate. It truly was a fantastic, fun day.
And there you have it Loyal Airmen. I hope you all have a great weekend, while the Air Chief joins his partner Rob Davis at Pulp Ark. Expect to see lots of photos when we return. Till then, be safe,
Ron – Over & Out!
