WINDY CITY WAS AWESOME!!!
- On 18 Apr | '2013
Greeting Loyal Airmen, well here we are all back, safe and sound from our trip to Chicago and the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention. Again it was another banner year for the Air Chief and Airship 27 Productions. We saw so many of our old friends and got to me many new ones as well.
Above is a great shot of the Airship 27 tables as manned by Rob Davis and the Air Chief. And you heard correctly, this was our first year having two long tables….and as you can see by the photo we needed every bit of that of that space. The show as so much fun and as ever our Loyal Airmen turned in large numbers to make it a huge success for us. The Air Chief did write up a long, detailed report of this year's show and it has been posted on the Comic Related website – (http://comicrelated.com/news/20326/windy-city-2013-report) Cut and past this to your url search engine and go check it out.
And yes, the new Airship 27 Crew Patches were a HUGE success. Our fans loved them. We'll be bringing more of these to Pulp Fest in Columbus in July. Another major feature of the show was the Pulp Factory Awards for the best pulp fiction and art from 2012. Winner of the Best Pulp Novel was the late Howard Hopkins for his book, “The Lone Ranger Vendetta,” from Moonstone Books. Best Pulp Cover went to artist Joe Devito for “The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage – The Infernal Buddha” from Altus Press. Best Interior Illustrations went to Rob Moran for Airship 27 Production's, “The Ruby Files.” And the winner of the Best Pulp Short Story for 2012 was…..
…..”The Ghoul,” by yours truly from the Pro Se Productions anthology, “Monster Aces,” created by Jim Beard and published by Tommy Hancock. See the gorgeous cover above. The book is still available at Amazon and on Kindle. This was the Air Chief's second win in a row and a truly humbling experience. We cannot thank our colleagues from the Pulp Factory for this singular recognition.
And here's a shot of the Air Chief holding his Pulp Factory trophy standing along side a very happy Tommy Hancock, the Managing Editor of Pro Se Productions, the publishers of “Monster Aces” in which our story was featured. Tommy's a very good friend and one of the leading heroes of the New Pulp Movement. In fact Pro Se Productions has just released their newest anthology and the Air Chief has a story in that one as well.
BLACK PULP is now out and available from Amazon and Kindle. It is a terrific collection of fantastic pulp adventures featuring predominantly black heroes with the stories crossing all kinds of genres from private eye to westerns and fantasies. Sadly the original pulps reflected the racism of their times, something all of us involved with the New Pulp Movement having been trying to make up for. Books like this one are a step in the right direction. Among its black creators are Charles Saunders, Gary Phillips, Derrick Ferguson and includes an introductory essay by Walter Mosley. The beautiful cover is by Adam Shaw. The Air Chief was thrilled and honored to contribute a story to this stellar group. We hope you go out and pick up a copy.
As ever, we did take lots more pictures of the con and in coming Flight Logs will parcel them out for you to enjoy. That's it. It was a grand show as ever and our fedoras are tipped to promoters Doug Ellis and John Gunnison. Who knows, maybe next year, Loyal Airmen, we'll see you there.
Ron – Over and Out!
