Greetings Loyal Airmen, as you read this entry, Val and in the Air Chief are still in Florida enjoying a short vacation visiting family. While we are aware, we thought we post a little something for those of you who actually check in here regularly. It’s about a cool idea between three comic amigos.
ONE SCRIPT – TWO COMICS
Three comic creators are about to produce a rather unique comic event in drawing two comic books from one script. The concept was born when Antarctic Press publisher, writer/artist Ben Dunn hooked up with writer Ron Fortier at a comic con in Loveland, Colorado. There, Fortier proposed writing a brand new Crimson Nun mini-series based on the character Dunn had created in the late 80s. Dunn liked the idea and gave Fortier the green light to proceed. Fortier then recruited artist Jesse Thomas to draw and color the series with artist Mike Belcher doing the lettering. Issue # 1 premier October.
While Fortier was busy writing that first issue, Dunn suggested they do an issue of his Tomorrow Girl together wherein she would team up with Mr. Jigsaw – Man of a Thousand Parts. Jiggy, as he’s often referred to by fans, was created by Fortier and artist Gary Kato over forty years ago for Charlton Comics. Since then, his adventures have continued in an ongoing series produced by Rob Davis’ Redbud Studio by the same creators. Fortier liked Dunn’s idea and went ahead and wrote a 24 page one shot adventure called “Time Quakes.” During its writing, he started thinking how it might be possible to get Kato involved with the project. Initially his idea was having Dunn draw the comic with Kato doing the cover.
Shorty before sending Dunn the finished script, Fortier had an altogether different and radical idea. What if he gave the script to both Dunn and Kato to draw? The version Kato would draw would then be published as the next issue in their Redbud Studio series. While the comic Dunn embellished would, as planned, be published by Antarctic Press. In the end there would exist two different comics based on the exact same script. The more Fortier entertained the idea, the more he fancied it. “I’d never heard of anyone ever doing this before,” he said recently. “The thought that fans would be able to purchase both comics then compare them, page for page would be fantastic. They could see where the two artists approaches were similar and at the same time where they were different.”
Most comic readers are aware that each graphic artist has his or her own unique style of drawing. Now they would be able to appreciate that in reality.
Fortier first approached Kato who signed on immediately and is now finishing his comic. Dunn, on the other hand, needed a little more clarification as to who would be doing what. After a few e-mail exchanges, he understood the concept and agreed to join in the fun. He has yet to decide where his comic will appear after he’s finished drawing it. “What all three of us, me, Ben and Gary, have in common,” Fortier concludes, “is our love of comics and keeping the fun in them. That’s why we’re all really excited about this project. We hope our fans will be as well.”
BEN DUNN’S COVER FOR THE TOMORROW GIRL COVER
We love it. No worries, we’ll show Gary’s cover for Mr. Jigsaw when he turns it in. And there you have it Loyal Airmen. We’ll see you back here next week when we get home. God bless.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, before we get into this week’s Flight Log and our hectic activities, we want to let all of you know it’s vacation time for Valerie and the Air Chief. On Sunday the 20th we are flying off to Florida for our annual visit with Val’s family. Happily our own destination didn’t suffer anything by rains and heavy winds from the last hurricane that slammed into the Sunshine State. We will be gone for ten days, returning to Colorado on the 30th of October. Just in time for Halloween. As we indicated in last week’s Flight Log, we are buried under sooooo….many comic projects, never mind our editorial duties for Airship 27 Productions. Which is why, we are asking all of you we are currently work with on all these projects….DO NOT SEND US ANY ARTWORK OR MANUSCRIPTS UNTIL WE ARE HOME AGAIN. Please. We are not taking any PCs or laptops etc. with us. These ten days in Florida are going to be true R & R – Rest and Relaxation from the truly hectic year we’ve experienced thus far. And believe me Loyal Airmen, it’s not going to let up any time soon as is evident by this next time
COMIC PROJECT # 13
Over thirty years ago, the Air Chief, inspired by the old C.C. Beck Captain Marvel comics, had an idea for a comic book series about a young teenage girl who was paralyzed and a diehard comic book fanatic. Her favorite hero was a World War II character called American Amazon. Through a weird series of events, the hallmark of most comic stories, this girl, Kendra, ends up being the new, modern day American Amazon for real. We’re not going to say any more, other than tell you this project has been collecting dust in our files all these years and the only real artwork ever done was the faux-comic-cover above at left by our pal Gary Kato. Okay, so last week, shortly after posting our list of the 12 comic projects we are currently working on, we received a FB message from artist Clint Scott wanting to know if we might have something he could work on with us. OUCH. We informed Clint of how busy we were and that taking on as yet a 13th project would be insane. Still, no writer every wants to say no to an artist knock on his or her door. We asked Clint to show us sample of his work. We liked what we saw and decided to take the plunge. We sent him that old clunky proposal and awaited his reaction. Well, Clint loved the concept and started doing up sketches from that proposal. Above right are Kendra and two of her friends, a couple of the projects supporting characters and he’s still working on more as we write this. Hopefully on our return from Florida, the Air Chief will find the time (HA) to re-write the entire proposal, it’s way too dated right now, tweak it, shape it into some looking like a decent modern day comic tale and then (BIG SIGH) write a script for Clint to sink his talented chops into. Loyal Airmen, wish us luck. Lots and lots of Luck.
BEYOND THE STARS #5
Colorist Angelo is doing a great job on the first few pages of BEYOND THE STARS # 5.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN CON
Want to thank my pal, Denver con promoter Tim Moret for announcing yours truly as his first gust for this year’s Rocky Mountain Con to be held Nov. 9th & Tenth. The Air Chief will have copies of The Crimson Nun # 1 on hand as well be promoting sign-ups for the official Kickstarter to our western comic, Hamlet’s End. Note, Hamlet’s End artist Zane DeGaine will also be on hand and we just may have another special ash booklet for all you cowboy fans.
BROTHER BONES GRAPHIC NOVEL
Artist Joe Arnold continues his amazing work on the new Brother Bones graphic novel. This is actual origin story told in comics. Every time we new pages, we get wound for sound. Keep’em coming, Joe.
AIRSHIP 27 PODCAST
Yesterday Chief Engineer Rob Davis and the Air Chief recorded the 97th episode of our Airship 27 Podcast. Though we only had a few titles to promote this time around, along with our bad jokes, you might want to go and watch it. The major topic of this episode is how much longer we’ll be keep Airship 27 Production going? We take a hard look at that question a discuss what our plans are going forward and just how many more years we can do this.
And there you have it for this week, Loyal Airmen. As we sign off, take care and remember, we will return in two weeks. God bless.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, the other day the Air Chief got to thinking about all the comics projects we’ve been working on this year. To highlight those, we put together the collage of covers below.
These are six of the twelve comic book projects we are currently actively engaged with. Not in this collage are Mr. Jigsaw, Chivalry Inc., The Black Bat, Genies, The Wooden Blade, Hamlet’s End and Captain Jain Marlee. Not bad for a 77 yr old comic geek.
FINN THE FORMIDABLE
And because all our own comic projects are what we call “Independent,” it is easy to see that the Air Chief also is a fan and supports other such Independent projects. One we discovered recently is “Finn – The Formidable” by our Fort Collins pal, writer/artist Brian Loner. Above is the cover to the first issue and the book is really well done. Though appearing on the “cartoony” side ala old classics like Groo etc. Brian uses the style to tell a straight up, dramatic story about a former knight who’s wife and son have been kidnapped by evil forces from another dimension. Brian’s art is terrific and his keeps his readers turning those pages. We really liked this opening chapter and can’t wait to see what happens next.
THE BEYOND THE STARS
Issue # 5, pgs 1,2 & 3 inked from master artist Andrea Bormida. Looking super.
THE CRIMSON NUN
Our pal, artist Dave Mowry turned in another great sketch of the Crimson Nun in action. Dave recently signed on with Airship 27 to be one of our many talented book illustrators. Really thrilled to have him on board.
And that’s a wrap for this week Loyal Airmen. Thanks ever for dropping by and we hope we’ll see you back here next Friday.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, before anything else, let’s take care of some comic book business.

BROTHER BONES GRAPHIC NOVEL
And here’s the last two sets of character sheets by artist Joe Arnold for the Brother Bones Graphic Novel which he is hammering away on every day. The plan continues to be to divide the script into a mini-series to then be funded on one of the campaign platforms after which they would be collected. Each issue, a chapter of the graphic novel story, will also include a bonus short strip at the back to be done by guest artists. More as things near completion.
HAMLET’S END
Hooked up with western artist Zane DeGaine this past week to discuss our comic project. “Hamlet’s End.” Zane has completed 16 of the 22 pgs making up issue # 1 and of course the cover (above left). He’s excited in getting those last 6 pgs wrapped up by the end of next week. This book will be funded by a Kickstarter Campaign which Zane will run and our plan is to set a goal which, when reached, will get the book published…but in black and white. Whereas there will be a second tier goal and if we can get to that benchmark, we’ll do the book in full color. So, Loyal Airmen, lots will depend on your support for sure. If all goes well, we hope to launch the campaign by the 1st of Nov. All fingers crossed.
THE BOSTON BOMBERS Vol 2
Rob Davis continues his stellar work on the third issue of The Boston Bombers Vol 2. Above is his just completed page three. We are so wound-for-sound. This is a story over twenty-years in the making.
JUNGLE TALES Vol 3
And finally we wrap up this week with announcing the release of our newest Airship 27 pulp title, JUNGLE TALES Vol 3 featuring Ki-Gor the Jungle Lord. This volume contains two brand new Ki-Gor adventures by Terry Wijesuriya and Carson Demmans. Writer Curtist Fernlund introduces Jenna of the Jungle (above right) and Bob Madison feature adventure Richmond Kane. In all four great jungle stories with interior illustrations by John Gallagher and a stunning cover by Ted Hammond. In all, we think you Loyal Airmen are going to love this book. As ever, available at Amazon in both paperback and on Kindle.
And that’s it for this busy week, Loyal Airmen, as always thanks for stopping by and God Bless.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, been a fun and exciting week here at Hangar 27. Lots of great projects coming together slow but sure and we’ll touch base with a quite a few. So here we go.
HAMLET’S END
Artist Zane DeGaine isn’t wasting any time getting issue # 1 finished. Above (right) is the completed pg # 15 of this 22 page comic. Meaning 7 to go and then on to lettering and the launching of whatever funding program he wants to use. The initial idea will be to propose the book as a black and white….BUT….if we meet our goals, then will deliver it full, glorious western colors. Stay tuned.
SHORT STORIES OF KEVIN J. ANDERSON
From New York Times bestselling author, Kevin J. Anderson, “For those who missed my KJA Short Fiction Library Kickstarter last spring, the books are finally going to be released to the general public. Today, Fantasy Stories vol 1 is available from @WordFirePress https://wordfirepress.com/products/fantasy-stories-volume-1”
Basically what Kevin did was collect a lifetime of published short stories and printed them in a wonderful seven volume set, as his press release above indicated. Many, many years ago, Kevin and the Air Chief belonged to a correspondence writers’ club and became pals. Other members included David C. Smith, Ardath Mayhar, and the late Charles Saunders. During that time, Kevin and yours truly wrote a short story called “Skeleton in the Closet.” It is reprinted in Vol 2 of this Fantasy sub-set. See cover above at right.
BROTHER BONES CHARACTERS
More of artist Joe Arnold’s characters from the Brother Bones graphic novel now in production.

More characters sketches from artist Joe Arnold for the now-in-production Brother Bones graphic novel. Joe’s doing a great job with these.
CRIMSON NUN IS HERE!
And finally, per the title of this week’s Flight Log, CRIMSON NUN # 1 is officially out. We received our copies from Antarctic Press’ own Ben Dunn yesterday. We will have these, both with Fred Lang’s cover (above left) and Ben’s (above right) at November’s Rocky Mountain Con in Denver. It was a dream come true for the Air Chief to get this assignment and the comic looks fantastic. Thanks to artist Jesse Thomas and letterer Mike Belcher. Now on to issue # 2. Oh, yeah.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, things are revving up with all the Air Chief’s many projects. So let’s jump right in, shall we.
BROTHER BONES GRAPHIC NOVEL
Artist Joe Arnold has been tweaking his design work for the characters that appear in our Brother Bones the Undead Avenger stories. All in preparation for the brand new graphic novel he is drawing. It will, for the first time ever, tell Bones’ origin in comic form. Stay tuned, it is going to be wild.
THE BOOK HUNTER’S DISCIPLE
Our newest Airship 27 Production pulp title release is “The Book Hunter’s Disciple,” by Barbara Doran. This is the second in Barbara’s Chinese fantasy series. Artist Gary Kato provides the nine black and white interior illustrations and Colorado’s own Guy Davis the fanciful color cover above here. As ever book is available at Amazon in both paperback and on Kindle. Continued thanks to all you Loyal Airmen for your support. It means the world to us.
A NEW SHORT STORY
We mentioned a few weeks ago that we were writing a Codename – Intrepid short story for Bob Mendenhall’s fourth volume in his action series. From creator/publisher Robert J. Mendenhall comes the complete roster. “Volume 4 is scheduled to hit the stands in February 2025 with a stellar line-up including Ron Fortier, Fred Adams, Jr, John C. Bruening, Andy Fix, and Gordon Dymowski. And some guy named Mendenhall. Holy Smoke!” The Air Chief is really thrilled to be included among this group of super talented New Pulp writers. Above is artist Ron Randall’s depiction of the Intrepid team.
ME & BOOMER
Was having a little chat with our dog Boomer the other day and our granddaughter Cora snapped the photo above. He’s a golden lab just a few months beyond a year old and we all love him dearly.
HAMLET’S END
Artist Zane DeGaine continues his excellent work our western comic, “Hamlet’s End.” Here’s his Pg 15 from issue # 1. Again, our hope to have it out in time for November’s Rocky Mountain Con here Denver.
And that’s a wrap for this week, Loyal Airmen. As ever, thanks for stopping by and we’ll see you all back here next Friday morning.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, last week we showed off three new pages from our new western comic, “Hamlet’s End.” Written by yours truly and art by good buddy Zane DeGaine. All of this came about when shortly after settling in Fort Collins, Zane and his wife Olivia, joined the Air Chief and Valerie in going out to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner one night. While awaiting our entrees, we asked Zane what kind of project he’d like to work on. Of course our intent was find out what he had a passion for and then seeing if it was something we might be able to offer him. “Westerns,” was his immediate reply.
It took a few years, but eventually the Air Chief came up with an solid idea for a western and that was “Hamlet’s End.” Zane read the script last year, loved it, and signed on. He even went as far as to do a short ash-can issue featuring the first 9 pages (above left) and sold them at a local con. Now he’s hard at work on completing the entire 22 pg first issue. Here’s pg # 13 (above right). His hope is to have it done within the next couple of weekss, and then he’s going to start a Kickstarter Campaign for it. Trust us, Loyal Airmen, the Air Chief is totally wound for sound about “Hamlet’s End.” Zane’s work on this comics is stunning and we can’t wait until the day you get to read it. We’ll keep youposted.
THE CRIMSON NUN
At the same time artist Jesse Thomas is back hard at work on the pencils for The Crimson Nun # 2. See those gorgeous pages above and that one sketch of our hero, Gabrielle Joan Cauxvette. You’ll allow the Air Chief grace for naming her after our mother, Gabrielle. And as far as we know, Antarctic Press is still set on releasing issue # 1 next month, Oct. Stay tuned, Loyal Airmen.
BROTHER BONES THE UNDEAD AVENGER
The Brother Bones graphic novel, now coming to life thanks to artist Joe Arnold, is also gaining steam indicative of the pencil roughs above. Joe says he’s having a ball drawing this origin tale of our Undead Avenger and we can tell from the enthusiasm he’s exhibiting in his art.
Joe’s been using pages from a 1930s Sears & Roebucks catalog to research dresses for our female characters. His hope is to have 50 pgs completed before we start assembling the Kickstarter campaign. Dang, but we do have lots of fun stuff on the way, Loyal Airmen. Start saving up your pennies.
SPECIAL HARDBACK EDITION OUT!
As you’ll recall only two weeks ago we released our Super Special Edition of Sherlock Holmes – Consulting Detective Vol 20. We made a big deal out of this because Art Director did the issue up to look like a copy of the actual Strand Magazine where most of the original Sherlock Holmes tales had first appeared in print. About the same time we’d also released the hardback edition of “Metropolis – Resurrection,” the sci-fi prequel novel. So…a few smart Loyal Airmen went to Rob and asked why not a hardback edition of the special Consulting Detective. Ever one to satisfy our readers, Rob got on it immediately and now if you head on over to Amazon, you can pick this volume in four editions. First on Kindle, then our regular paperback size, then our bigger magazine size…and now that larger size in hard back. Hopefully that pleases all you terrific Holmes & Watson fans out there.
NEW PROSE FICTION STORY
Back at this year’s Windy City Pulp & Paper con, we talked with writer Bob Mendenhall about possibly writing a story for his terrific Codename – Intrepid action series featuring a super-secret military team. Bob graciously gave us the green light and we recently wrapped up a story featuring Master Sergeant “Hammer” Downe (above right) called “The Lost Jungle.” Thanks to pal Lee Houston Jr. who helped with formatting. That’s a terrific sketch of Hammer by artist Ron Randall and the link below is to Bob’s site. Check it out, Loyal Airmen. This is the good stuff.
ANOTHER AUDIO BOOK ADDED
A little while back Art Director Rob Davis decided to try posting one of our novels to Audible via its Amazon listing. I.e. Amazon makes this arrangement and Audible uses AI voices to do the narration. His first attempt was with one of Nancy Hansen’s Jezebel Johnston pirate books and everyone thought it worked better than expected. With that positive result, he’s now put up one of our Sherlock Holmes Consulting Anthologies, Vol 17 to be specific (see cover above) which features stories by I.A. Watson, R.A. Jones, George Tackes and Jonathan Casey. It’s now up at the Amazon page. If you enjoy audio book downloads, go on and give it a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.
BEYOND THE STARS # 4
And finally the biggest news of this week. Artist Andrea Bormida has finished work on our sci-fi series, “Beyond the Stars” # 4. The pages are now in letterer Mike Belcher’s talented hands and as soon as he wraps it up, the book will be delivered to Silverline Comics. As this is a six part mini-series, we are left with only to chapters left. Thanks again for all your Loyal Airmen who have helped by supporting the funding campaigns for the first three issues. We’ll let you know when this one is up.
And phew, Loyal Airmen, that’s plenty for one week. Ha. As Ever thanks for stopping by and we’ll see you all back here next Friday morning.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen, we hope you all had a great holiday weekend. The Air Chief is still ecstatic about the return of our video podcast to You Tube. Remember you can find The Airship 27 Podcast # 95 there right now. And by now possibly # 96, as yours truly and Chief Engineer Rob Davis recorded them back to back. Please, should you watch either, do leave comments and let us know what you think, both good and bad.
HARDBACK BOOKS
Last year Amazon made it known that they could do hardback editions of our titles. So we did one collecting many of my Brother Bones stories. We liked the results and then put all that on the back burner. Our thoughts were to save doing hardbacks for when we had what we considered an exceptional offering. Well, that happened with the prequel novel, “Metropolis – Resurrection” by Charles Santino and Michael Panush, with art by James Lyle. Both the Air Chief and Rob thought this truly great book merited an extra something special; and that was a hardback edition. Ours arrived in the mail the other day (see above) and we are more than happy with result. This is a marvelous title and truly deserving of this beautiful edition. Again, as ever, available from Amazon.
THE BOSTON BOMBERS Vol 2 – Issue # 3
Meanwhile, Rob Davis continues to draw “The Boston Bombers Vol 2.” Above is a page from Issue # 3. Yes, yes, Loyal Airmen, we are well aware we haven’t released Issue # 2 as yet. But that’s only because the good folks at (www.IndyPlanet.com) are taking a long-long time in getting it posted there. As soon that earth-shattering event happens, we’ll be sure to let you know. Sigh.
HAMLET’S END
Perhaps the most exciting item on this week’s entry is artist Zane DeGaine’s amazing new work on our western comic, “Hamlet’s End.” Above are his early roughs for pages 10, 11 & 12. Honestly, they once again remind us of why we love comics so much. When the Air Chief wrote these scenes in the script, the images in our mind’s eye was okay. But it was never as powerful and dramatic as what Zane has done here. We are so excited about this project and with luck could have this issue # 1 out before the end of the year. Wahooooo!
PODCAST # 96 IS LIVE!
And so as we wrapped up this week’s Flight Log, we are happy to announced that the Airship 27 Podcast Episode # 96 is now up at You Tube. In it, the Air Chief and Chief Engineer Rob Davis discuss the second 9 of the 18 titles we’d released since the start of the year. Then to add frosting to that cake, look what showed up in the Air Chief’s mail today!! The deluxe, Special Edition Sherlock Holmes – Consulting Detective Vol 20. It is beautiful and very much the collector’s item we predicted. Again, available at Amazon, Loyal Airmen.
And there you have, a fast and exciting week. As ever, thanks for stopping by and we’ll see you all back here next Friday.
Ron – Over & Out!
Greetings Loyal Airmen. Well, after a decade of publishing some of the finest Sherlock Holmes mysteries via our best selling series, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, we’ve reached volume 20. And to celebrate that achievement, we decided to make it super special.
Included in this special volume is writer I.A. Watson’s novella, “The Strand Magazine Murders,” wherein Holmes, Dr. Watson solved a murder at the various publishing house that chronicled their adventures. To add this theme, Art Director Rob Davis designed the book to look like a copy of that famous magazine and so we are offering it in three different formats. First there is our usual Kindle version, then our regular 6 X 9 paperback version, and then the larger square format to resemble the original Strand. Also withing these pages you’ll find stories by Teel James Glenn, Ray Lovato and Michael BLack. Loyal Airmen, we are serious when we say this book will soon be come a collector’s item. All three versions are now available at Amazon. As always, thanks so much for your continued support.
BASS REEVES PAINTING
Another of Airship 27’s popular pulp series is our “BASS REEVES – Frontier Marshal,” based on the exploits of that real life U.S. Deputy Marshal who rode the badlands of Oklahoma (before it became a state) and surrounding territories. That’s a picture of him above left. Also there was an 8 part mini-series on television recently. The other day, fellow new publisher, Milton Davis, let it be known there is going to be a panel at this week-end’s Dragon Con in Atlanta devoted to the life and legend of this lawman. In doing so Davis printed a new painting done by artist James Loveless (above right) which the Air Chief just had to share with all you Loyal Airmen. Here’s hoping that panel is a huge success.
GARY’S KING ARTHUR COMIC
A couple of weeks back we mentioned that our pal Gary Kato’s black and white “The Eternal Sword” graphic novel had just been published at Amazon. Well our copy arrived in the mail today, a little beat up but still okay to read and enjoy and have for our own library. Gary tells an adult tale of the famous King Arthur legend and though we do highly recommend to you pick up a copy, please aware it is not intended for children. That said, it is an incredible achievement with gorgeous artwork throughout.
NEW PROMO BEYOND THE STARS
As we awaiting the final touches on “Beyond the Stars” # 4, artist Andrea Bormida was generous enough to provide us with this new pin-up of two of our heroes. Thanks, pal. We love it.
THE AIRSHIP 27 PODCAST RETURNS!
After months of being unable to record a new episode, the Air Chief is happy to report the Airship 27 podcast is back!! Over a week ago, we dumped our Comcast account and signed on to a new internet service which has proven to be efficient and rewarding. And so the Air Chief, and Hangar 27’s Chief Engineer, Rob Davis, got together via Skype and recording Episode # 95. As we write this, that episode should now be available for you to view on You Tube. Again, simply write in the search box – Airship 27 Podcast # 95 and you should be able to find it. We hope you are as excited about this as we are. Note we’ve also got our Bad Jokes segment that you won’t want to miss. As always Loyal Airmen, do leave us notes or comments and let us know your own thoughts. Thanks ever.
And that’s it for this week. Take care and we hope to see you back here next Friday morning.
Ron – Over & Out!
